اكابد في دجى ليل التمام

تباريح الصبابة والغرام

In the darkness of the longest night, I endure

the agonies of yearning and consuming love.

فيمسي جامع الضدين جفني

سخاء الدمع في بخل المنام

So at evening my eyelid unites two opposites:

tears' generosity amid sleep's stinginess.

غليل في الحشا يزداد وقداً

بمنهل من الدمع السجام

A burning thirst within my breast grows fiercer

with a spring of freely flowing tears.

وذكرى جيرة نزحوا وشطوا

عن الصب المشوق المستهاوز

And the memory of neighbors who departed and went far

from the lovesick, yearning one [final epithet unclear].

رعى الله الأحبة حيث كانوا

بتحقيق الاماني والمرام

May God protect the loved ones wherever they may be,

fulfilling their wishes and desires.

كرائم في ذمام الله ساروا

وكل العز في هذا الذمام

Noble souls, they journeyed under God's protection,

and all honor lies in this protection.

اميل لذكرهم طرباً كاني

شربت وحاش لي كاس المدام

I sway with rapture at their mention, as though I

had drunk—far be it from me!—a cup of wine.

اراجعة لنا أيام وصل

زهت زهو الربى غب الغمام

Will days of union return to us,

radiant as the hills after the clouds?

وكان بقربهم ليلي قصيراً

فطال لبعدهم بجوى الأوام

And with them near, my night was short;

so their distance lengthened it with thirst's burning anguish.

إذا ادنى السلام نوى فحيا

حسينا ذا العلى ارج السلام

If greetings bridge distance, then may they salute

Husayn, possessor of eminence, with their fragrance.

حسين حل من أوج المعالي

محلا لا يساميه مسامي

Husayn has settled, at the summit of lofty honors,

in a station no rival can equal.

خضم فضائل وسحاب فضل

وروض محاسن زهر وسام

An ocean of virtues and a cloud of bounty,

and a garden of beauties, radiant and lofty.
