Iraq had yearned for its like;
Iraq was longing for its like
glad tidings to the yearning one: what he yearns for has come to him.
Good news to the eager one, for the intriguing has come to it
هذاthis نهارday العلمlearning اشرقhas dawned وانجلىand has cleared away
هذا نهار العلم اشرق وانجلى
عنfrom وجهface أفقكyour horizon ليلnight جهلignorance غاسقpitch-dark
عن وجه أفقك ليل جهل غاسق
This day of learning has dawned; now lifted
This is the day of knowledge that shone and cleared
from your horizon's face is ignorance's pitch-dark night.

قدindeed كانwas ياO عينeye البلادthe lands لكyours العلىeminence
قد كان يا عين البلاد لك العلى
أيامin the days when أعينهاtheir eyes إليكtoward you روامقgazing
أيام أعينها إليك روامق
Eminence was indeed yours, O eye of the lands,
You had the height, O eye of the countries
in the days when their eyes gazed toward you.
When their eyes were flags raised to you
فبهاءso the splendor حسنكyour beauty رائقdelightful وسناءand the radiance
فبهاء حسنك رائق وسناء
علمكyour learning فائقsurpassing ولواءand the banner عزكyour glory خأفقfluttering
علمك فائق ولواء عزك خأفق
So the splendor of your beauty is delightful, and the radiance
The radiance of your beauty is pleasant and the glory
of your learning excels, and the banner of your glory flutters.
Of your knowledge sublime and the banner of your might fluttering
ومسانحand arenas الألبابthe minds فيكin you مدارسschools
ومسانح الألباب فيك مدارس
ومسارحand pastures الأحداقthe eyes فيكin you حدائقgardens
ومسارح الأحداق فيك حدائق
And schools in you are arenas for minds,
And the symposia of minds in you are schools
and gardens in you are pastures for the eyes.
And the theaters of visions in you are gardens
فيكin you الفلاسفةthe philosophers الجهابذةthe great masters الألىwho
فيك الفلاسفة الجهابذة الألى
سبقواthey forged ahead ولمand did not يدركattain مداهمtheir reach لاحقa follower
سبقوا ولم يدرك مداهم لاحق
In you are the philosophers, the great masters who
In you are the prominent philosophers of great stature
forged ahead, and no follower has reached their mark.

فالعدلfor justice ظلshade سابغample والعلمand learning
فالعدل ظل سابغ والعلم
وردa draught سائغpleasant to drink والعيشand life عودa bough وارقleafy
ورد سائغ والعيش عود وارق
For justice is an ample shade, and learning
For justice is a lasting shade, and knowledge
a pleasant draught, and life a leafy bough.
A fragrant rose, and living a tender branch
