Sol 6.1

  1. حقاً اقول ولا ادين لباطل

    والحق ابلج يستنير جماله

    I speak the truth and yield to no falsehood;

    and truth is radiant, its beauty shining.

  2. ان البديع محسّن مالم يكن

    بتكلف ينأى عليك مناله

    Indeed, rhetorical ornament lends beauty, so long as it is not

    contrived, its attainment lying far beyond your reach.

  3. واللفظ والمعنى إذا اتفقا به

    تم الملاك وبالبديع كماله

    And when wording and meaning agree within it,

    the essential basis is complete, and rhetorical ornament perfects it.

  4. لا ينفع الفرس المهجن سرجه

    لا ينفع السيف الأثيت صقاله

    A crossbred horse gains nothing from its saddle;

    an unsound sword gains nothing from its polish.

  5. ما بهجة الريحان في رسم عفا

    بعد الانيس وأوحشت اطلاله

    What delight has basil amid a dwelling's faded traces,

    after the companion has gone and its ruins have grown desolate?

  6. ولربّ خدفيه يشقى خاله

    قبحاً وخد فيه يسعد خاله

    And on many a cheek its beauty mark suffers

    from ugliness, while on another cheek its beauty mark rejoices.

  7. ولربّ تجنيس ترق شموله

    وترف في روض البديع شماله

    And many a pun has delicate wine,

    and its north wind wafts through the garden of rhetorical ornament.

  8. ومن البديع منمق لفظ بلا

    معنى وذاك الدّاء جل عضاله

    And some rhetorical ornament is adorned wording without

    meaning—and that is a disease grievously hard to cure.

  9. مثل السراب يظن ورداً سائغاً

    وشرابه متعذر وبلاله

    Like a mirage thought to be a pleasant draught of water,

    yet its drink and its moisture cannot be obtained.

  10. فاتبع إذا شئت الهدى نهج الرضا

    فهو الرضى المرتضى استدلاله

    So, if you desire guidance, follow al-Rida's path;

    for he is al-Rida, whose reasoning is approved.

  11. نسقت فرائده بسمط نوادر

    ومضت شوارد في الورى أمثاله

    His peerless pearls have been strung into a necklace of rarities,

    and his proverbial sayings have ranged far among humankind.

  12. بحر يفوق الزاخرات عبابه

    حبر يروق السامعين مقاله

    A sea whose surge surpasses the brimming seas;

    a scholar whose speech delights the listeners.
