قد فل أي مرهف سيف القضا
Fate's sword has blunted so keen a blade;
so keen a blade has fate's sword blunted.
قضىstruck down علىupon حبرa learned scholar فقيهa jurist رزؤهthe loss of him
قضى على حبر فقيه رزؤه
جلwas grievous عليناupon us وعلىand upon الصبرpatience قضىput an end
جل علينا وعلى الصبر قضى
It struck down a scholar-jurist, whose loss
was grievous to us and put an end to patience.
فأدمعيthus my tears منfrom بعدهafter him ذاتfull of الأضاpools
فأدمعي من بعده ذات الأضا
وأضلعيand my ribs منfrom بعدهafter him ذاتfull of الغضاghada wood
وأضلعي من بعده ذات الغضا
Thus my tears, since his passing, are pools,
and my ribs, since his passing, hold ghada embers.
صوحwithered روضthe garden الفضلof excellence بعدafter عارضa rain cloud
صوح روض الفضل بعد عارض
سكبpoured بهinto it الفصلjudgment; discernment الأنيقgraceful روضاas a garden
سكب به الفصل الأنيق روضا
The garden of excellence withered after a rain cloud
had poured graceful judgment into it as a garden.
وغابand vanished عنfrom افاقهاits horizons بدرthe full moon الهدىof guidance
وغاب عن افاقها بدر الهدى
وطالماand how often جلاdispelled الضلالerror إذwhen أضاshone
وطالما جلا الضلال إذ أضا
And guidance's full moon vanished from its horizons,
and how often it dispelled error when it shone!
هادa guide إلىto نهجthe path الهدىof guidance مهديهاits Mahdi; its rightly guided one
هاد إلى نهج الهدى مهديها
مفيدهاits benefactor الحبرthe learned scholar الرضيthe virtuous المرتضىthe chosen; approved
مفيدها الحبر الرضي المرتضى
A guide to the path of guidance, its Mahdi,
its benefactor, the virtuous and esteemed scholar.
ياO آلfamily of راضيRadi الفاضلينthe virtuous أنتمyou (plural)
يا آل راضي الفاضلين أنتم
احقmost worthy منone who يلقىmeets القضاءfate بالرضاwith acceptance
احق من يلقى القضاء بالرضا
O virtuous family of Radi, you are
most worthy to meet fate with acceptance.
فأحسنso may He grant gracious اللهGod العزاconsolation موفراًbestowing abundantly
فأحسن الله العزا موفراً
لكمfor you ثوابthe reward منone who اليدthe hand; control (wording unclear) فوضاentrusted; surrendered
لكم ثواب من اليد فوضا
May God grant gracious consolation, bestowing in full
upon you the reward of one who surrendered control [wording unclear].
فيin الحسنal-Hasan الزاكيthe pure وبسططلهand [may his shade be extended] (uncertain reading)
في الحسن الزاكي وبسططله
لكمfor you سلوsolace عنfor فقيدa departed one قبضاwas taken in death
لكم سلو عن فقيد قبضا
In al-Hasan the pure—and [may his shade be extended]—
you have solace for the departed one taken away.
ولمand has not يمتdied منone whose كانwas ذكرthe remembrance فضلهof his excellence
ولم يمت من كان ذكر فضله
حياًalive ومنand one who is سليلa scion عبدAbd (servant) الرضاal-Rida (contentment)
حياً ومن سليل عبد الرضا
And he has not died whose virtues' memory
lives, and who is a scion of Abd al-Rida.
