For the vicissitudes of fate have laid it waste.

For time has grievously wronged it

كأنها لم تك ربع الندى

وملجأ العاني ومأوى الضيوف

وملجأ العاني ومأوى الضيوف

As though it had never been the abode of generosity,

As though it was never the cornerstone of affection

And a refuge for the captive and a haven for guests.
