ابلغ إذا جئت أبا
وهوand he الألمعيthe keen-witted اللبيبthe discerning
وهو الألمعي اللبيب
Convey the message, when you come to Abā ...,
Deliver if you came to Abu
And he is keen-witted and discerning.
And he is the bright, intelligent one
وقلand say لهto him أينwhere استقلdeparted الحدىunclear; perhaps guidance (الهدى)
وقل له أين استقل الحدى
منكfrom you فأصبحتso you have become بأمرin a situation عجيبstrange
منك فأصبحت بأمر عجيب
And tell him: where has [guidance?] departed
And say to him where did independence depart
From you, that you have come to such a strange state?
From you so you became in a strange state
تخذلyou forsake دينthe religion of اللهGod مستنصراseeking support
تخذل دين الله مستنصرا
منout of سفهfoolishness of الرايjudgment لدينfor the religion of الصليبthe Cross
من سفه الراي لدين الصليب
You forsake God's religion, seeking support—
You let down the religion of Allah seeking help
Out of foolish judgment—for the faith of the Cross.
From the foolishness of the opinion for the religion of the cross
وتسلمand you surrender الثغرthe frontier لأعدائهto its enemies
وتسلم الثغر لأعدائه
اسلمكmay He abandon you اللهGod ليومto a day عصيبgrievous
اسلمك الله ليوم عصيب
And surrender the frontier to its enemies;
And you hand over the border to its enemies
May God abandon you to a grievous day!
May Allah hand you over to a painful day
انكindeed you تبغيseek خطةa course مالهاit has no
انك تبغي خطة مالها
فيin الدينreligion والدنياand worldly life جميعاًboth نصيبshare
في الدين والدنيا جميعاً نصيب
You seek a course that has no
You want a plan that has
Share in either religion or worldly life.
No share in religion or life altogether
انكindeed you كالباحثlike one searching عنfor مديةa knife
انك كالباحث عن مدية
فthen يحدهاhe sharpens it ذاقhe tasted الحمامdeath الرهيبdreadful
ف يحدها ذاق الحمام الرهيب
You are like one searching for a knife,
You are like one looking for refuge
Then sharpens it—and tastes dreadful death.
So he found it but tasted bitter hardship
منfrom سفهfoolishness of الرأيjudgment ومنand from افنهits feebleness
من سفه الرأي ومن افنه
ياO شيخsheikh انif تدعيyou are called (likely تُدعى) فلاthen not تستجيبyou respond
يا شيخ ان تدعي فلا تستجيب
Through foolish judgment and its feebleness,
From foolishness of opinion and loss of glory
O sheikh, if called, you do not answer.
O sheikh if you claim then do not respond
فلاso may … not سقاكgive you drink اللهGod الاexcept القذيdregs; impurities in water
فلا سقاك الله الا القذي
بعدhenceforth ولاnor ارعاكgive you pasture الاexcept الجديبbarren ground
بعد ولا ارعاك الا الجديب
So may God give you nothing to drink but dregs
So Allah only gives you bitter water to drink
Henceforth, nor pasture you on anything but barren ground.
After and feeds you only bitter plants
ماnot هوit الاexcept قلمa pen نافذذpotent (likely نافذ)
ما هو الا قلم نافذذ
يسلبكstrips you of الأمرauthority فبئسso wretched is السليبthe dispossessed one
يسلبك الأمر فبئس السليب
It is nothing but a potent pen
It is nothing but a sharp pen
That strips you of authority—wretched is the dispossessed!
That robs you of authority so evil is the robbery
فتخلعso you cast off العزhonor وابرادهand its cloaks
فتخلع العز وابراده
وتلبسand you put on الذلhumiliation بهاby it/them عنwithin قريبa short time
وتلبس الذل بها عن قريب
So you cast off honor and its cloaks,
So you shed honor and restore it
And thereby don humiliation before long.
And you wear humiliation, with that soon
