قد صافحوا الترب في اكتاف بغداد
When you come to Jurjan, carry word that his household
Tell George, when you come to him, that his family
have clasped the dust upon Baghdad’s shoulders.
have shaken hands with the dust on Baghdad's flanks.

They scattered in every direction through the cavalry’s dust as it charged
They scattered in all directions amid the horses' dust as the steeds charged
upon them—like ghouls beneath lions.
upon them like she-ghouls beneath lions.

حتى ارتوت من نجيع غلطة الصادي
A blind host met them and did not cease
A thirsty band met them and did not withdraw
until it drank its fill of gore—the thirsty man’s mistaken draught.
until it drank its fill of the blood of the thirsty one's blunder.

The blaze of our cannon-fire seared them,
It scorched them with the heat of our cannon fire,
and struck them dead with lightning flashes and thunderclaps.
and struck them down with lightning flashes and thunder.

Their slain, flung aside, filled the ravines,
like spoils of war beyond all count.
like spoils beyond counting.

Not a club remained in London where men gathered
No club where gatherings were held remained in London
without that very club raising a grief-stricken wail.
without that club wailing in sorrow.
