O Abū Aḥmad, you whose renown has traveled
Abu Ahmad, you are he whose fame has traveled
like sunlight’s course through west and east—
as sunlight travels through the west and east.

I saw generosity as a horizon, your countenance its full moon;
I saw generosity as a horizon, your face its full moon;
and does the full moon ever appear except upon the horizon?
and does the full moon shine forth except from the horizon?

A cloud: when the hopeful petitioner calls upon its rain-bearing sign,
You are a cloud: when a hopeful seeker asks its rain-star for rain,
from it life-giving rain smiles forth—the shower’s first fresh flow.
it beams, pouring life-giving rain in the finest showers.

A nature of beneficence that binds its recipients to praise
A kindly nature that binds tongues to praise
and, through acclaim, sets the tongues of all people free.
and frees people's tongues in lavish acclaim.

Kindness and gentleness have indeed been your custom,
Kindness and gentleness have indeed been your habit,
for part of winning glory lies in kindness and gentleness.
and glory is gained in part through kindness and gentleness.

Virtues whose fragrance grows richer—as though they were
Traits whose fragrance grows stronger, as though they were
gardens perfumed by fresh, radiant blossoms.
gardens fragrant with their fresh, smiling blossoms.

Too sublime are noble virtues for anyone to say that there has changed
I hold noble virtues above the claim that there has been a change
the nature of a noble man, nursed on nature and character.
in the nature of a generous man, splendid in form and character.

Indeed, under generosity’s law, that nature is inborn;
Rather, it is a lull in generosity's law,
a scion of Aḥmad shall openly proclaim its truth.
during which Ahmad's son will proclaim the truth.

How then, despite my sincerity and pure affection—
So how, despite my sincerity and my pure affection—
when the noblest height affection can attain is sincerity—
and affection's noblest ascent is through sincerity—

could you forestall me, hastening first to reproach me, saying:
do you rush ahead of me to reproach, saying,
“I see you often shunning me, O man of noble character.”
“I see you often turning away, O man of fine character”?
