الا ان نهج العز بالعزم يسلك

الا ان نهج العز بالعزم يسلك

وبالجد غايات لمن رام تدرك

Behold, the path to honor is trodden with resolve,

Destiny's path is trod with resolve,

and through diligence, goals are attained by those who seek them.

And diligence brings within reach aspired goals.

ولا ضير في خطب على الحرّ انما

ولا ضير في خطب على الحرّ انما

يهذب بالنار النضار ويسبك

يهذب بالنار النضار ويسبك

Nor does calamity harm a free man; it is only

No shame in struggles for the free - rather

by fire that pure gold is refined and cast.

Fire refines pure metal and welds bonds tight.

إذا المرء لم يجعل له الله هادياً

إذا المرء لم يجعل له الله هادياً

من العقل يهديه إلى الخير يهلك

من العقل يهديه إلى الخير يهلك

If God does not appoint for a man a guide

When God appoints no mentor of intellect

from reason to lead him to goodness, he perishes.

To guide a man to good, he is doomed.

خليلي ان الصدق اشبه بالفتى

خليلي ان الصدق اشبه بالفتى

فما بال قوم بالأضا ليل تأفك

فما بال قوم بالأضا ليل تأفك

My two friends, truthfulness better befits a young man;

My friend, candor resembles a noble youth -

so why do people use falsehoods to distort

Why do people shroud truth in the cloak of night?

الحق لكن حال من دون نيله

الحق لكن حال من دون نيله

زمان إذا ما خاصم الحر يمحك

زمان إذا ما خاصم الحر يمحك

the truth? Yet its attainment has been barred by

Though the right be evident, one deprived of it

an age that grows obstinate whenever it disputes with a free man.

Will long dispute with the virtuous and relent.

لقضى الدهر غير العدل ان يرزق المنى

لقضى الدهر غير العدل ان يرزق المنى

غبي ويكدى اللوذعي المحنك

غبي ويكدى اللوذعي المحنك

Time has surely decreed injustice: that wishes be granted

If fate but granted each wish, it would enrich

to a fool, while the keen-witted, seasoned man is left empty-handed.

The fool and doom the adept to thankless toil.
