شوق نفى عن جفوني لذة الوسن

فبت رهن الأسى والوجد والشجن

فبت رهن الأسى والوجد والشجن

Longing banished the pleasure of slumber from my eyelids,

So I spent the night captive to sorrow, ardent longing, and grief.

وذكر عهد هوى حن الفؤاد له

وذكر عهد هوى حن الفؤاد له

كما يحن غريب الدار للوطن

كما يحن غريب الدار للوطن

And the memory of a time of love for which the heart yearned,

As one far from home yearns for his homeland.

صبابة يستدر الدمع لاعجها

صبابة يستدر الدمع لاعجها

فيستهل بصوب العارض الهتن

فيستهل بصوب العارض الهتن

A longing whose burning anguish draws forth tears,

So they stream like the downpour of a raincloud.

الله أي نوى من دونكم عرضت

الله أي نوى من دونكم عرضت

فعرضتني للتبريح والحزن

فعرضتني للتبريح والحزن

By God, what separation has come between me and you,

And so subjected me to torment and sorrow!

يذكي جوى حسن ذكر الحسين ولا

يذكي جوى حسن ذكر الحسين ولا

بدع فان حسينا سلوة الحسن

بدع فان حسينا سلوة الحسن

The remembrance of Husayn kindles Hasan’s anguish—and no

Wonder, for Husayn is Hasan’s solace.

اغر ابلج من لاحت فضائله

اغر ابلج من لاحت فضائله

كانها غرة في جبهة الزمن

كانها غرة في جبهة الزمن

Radiant and bright of brow—one whose virtues shone,

As though they were a white blaze upon the brow of time.
