ولماand when بنوsons of اليونانGreece ساءتturned vile فعالهمtheir deeds
ولمand did not يحفلواthey heed مناfrom us بعتبto reproach ولاnor نصحcounsel
And when the deeds of the sons of Greece turned vile,
When the Greeks' deeds turned evil,
and they heeded neither our reproach nor our counsel,
And they stopped heeding our rebuke and advice,
وقدand indeed كانhad been مناfrom us الصفحforgiveness لكنهمbut they بغواthey transgressed
وجلتand grew grave خطاياهمtheir sins عنbeyond العفوpardon والصفحand forgiveness
and though we had shown forgiveness, they transgressed,
Though we were forgiving, they sought war,
and their sins grew too grave for pardon or forgiveness,
And their sins exceeded pardon and forgiveness.
رجعناwe resorted لحكمto the judgment of المشرفيةMashrafi swords بينناbetween us
ولاand no حكمjudgment مثلlike المهندthe Indian-steel sword والرمحand the spear
we turned to the judgment of Mashrafi swords between us;
We returned to the rule of the sword between us,
and no judgment matches that of the Indian-steel sword and the spear.
For no rule rivals the spear and blade.
رضيناwe were content بماwith what ترضىthey approve بمؤتمرat the council of الوغىbattle
فقالتso they said بأنthat الحربwar خيرbetter منthan الصلحpeace
We accepted what they approved at the council of battle,
We accepted what the council of war decreed,
and they declared that war was better than peace.
That battle is better than peace.
فماso did not برحتcease تتلوreciting الدخانThe Smoke عليهمover them
مدافعcannons منof نارfire بألسنةwith tongues فصحeloquent
So they never ceased reciting 'The Smoke' over them—
Our cannons kept raining smoke upon them,
cannons of fire, with eloquent tongues.
With tongues of fire in eloquent speech.
واسيافناand our swords تتلوrecite الدخانThe Smoke ومثلهاand like them
مدافعناour cannons حتىuntil تلتthey recited سورةthe chapter of الفتحThe Victory
And our swords recited 'The Smoke,' and likewise
And our swords recited after the smoke,
our cannons, until they recited the chapter 'The Victory.'
As did our cannons, until Surat Al-Fath was completed.
