You tormented my eyelid with sleeplessness.
Sleepless nights tortured my eyes
Is this a display of power?
Thus is the power
الذنبthe fault ليis mine لأننيbecause I
الذنب لي لأنني
رعيتI honored عهدthe covenant منone who غدرbetrayed
رعيت عهد من غدر
The fault is mine, for I
The blame is mine
kept faith with one who betrayed.
For keeping faith with one who betrayed
ياO ريمgazelle ماليI have no للجفاfor estrangement
يا ريم مالي للجفا
ولاnor البعادseparation مصطبرendurance
ولا البعاد مصطبر
O gazelle, I cannot bear estrangement,
O Reem, I've no excuse for abandonment
nor endure separation.
Nor resignation to separation
واحربيalas for my anguish منfrom شادنa young gazelle
واحربي من شادن
غادرنيhe left me علىin خطرperil
غادرني على خطر
Alas, my anguish from a young gazelle
Battle those who
who left me in peril!
Left me endangered
وواغليليand alas for my burning thirst للمىfor the dusky tint
وواغليلي للمى
مرشفهhis lips العذبsweet الخصرcool
مرشفه العذب الخصر
And oh, my burning thirst for the dusky tint
And make anguish
of his sweet, cool lips!
For one whose soft waist allures
يرنوhe gazes بجفنwith an eyelid فاترlanguid
يرنو بجفن فاتر
منتصرtriumphant إذاwhen انكسرit droops
منتصر إذا انكسر
He gazes with a languid eyelid,
With a languid glance
triumphant when it droops.
Triumphant though broken
وينثنيand he sways بقامةwith a form
وينثني بقامة
يقلis borne aloft اعلاهاat its summit قمرa moon
يقل اعلاها قمر
And he sways with a form
And a figure that bends
at whose summit a moon is borne.
Its summit brighter than any moon
فأفقهso its horizon الغصنthe bough وماand what
فأفقه الغصن وما
لهit has دجىdarkness سورa rampart الطررthe forelocks
له دجى سور الطرر
So its horizon is the bough, and what
So I rouse the bough though
it has for darkness is a rampart of forelocks.
It has but the gloom of castle walls
إذاwhen اجلتyou let roam الطرفthe gaze
إذا اجلت الطرف
فيهover him قلتyou said ماnot هذاthis بشرa mortal
فيه قلت ما هذا بشر
When you let your gaze roam
When my eyes squint at it
over him, you say, 'This is no mortal.'
I say, can this be human?
ياO قلبheart انindeed الصبرpatience كاlike
يا قلب ان الصبر كا
لمحبوبthe beloved خانhas betrayed فاستعرso blaze
لمحبوب خان فاستعر
O heart, indeed patience, like the
O heart, patience for the beloved
beloved, has proved faithless; so blaze!
Who betrayed is like borrowing flames
وقدand indeed لقيتyou have endured منfrom هواهlove for him
وقد لقيت من هواه
ماwhat لقيتyou have endured فاعتبرso take heed
ما لقيت فاعتبر
And through love for him you have endured
And from passion for him
what you have endured; so take heed.
I've suffered, so take heed
