Who will convey to Abu Salih on my behalf
The messenger told Abu Salih
the words of a lover sincere in affection?
The words of a sincere lover:
ماwhat بالthe matter مشتاقone who longs إلىfor وصلهunion with him
ما بال مشتاق إلى وصله
معذبtormented بالهجرby estrangement والصدand rejection
معذب بالهجر والصد
Why is one who longs for union with him
"Why does my longing soul still await
tormented by estrangement and rejection?
Union with one who rejects me,
لاnot يهتديfinds its way الأنسconviviality إلىto مجلسa gathering
لا يهتدي الأنس إلى مجلس
تغيبis absent عنهfrom it طلعةthe countenance المهديthe Mahdi
تغيب عنه طلعة المهدي
Conviviality cannot find its way to a gathering
Our friendship (once) bloomed like the dawn,
from which the Mahdi's countenance is absent.
Gladdened by your smile each day.
ونحنand we كالعقدlike a necklace انتظمناwe have strung ourselves together فهلso will?
ونحن كالعقد انتظمنا فهل
يزينهadorns it واسطةthe central jewel العقدof the necklace
يزينه واسطة العقد
And we have strung ourselves together like a necklace—so will
We formed a necklace, each jewel aligned;
the necklace's central jewel adorn it?
Will one link suffice, with you away?"
