Welcome to the rising of one upon whose brow

ورناand gazed إليهtoward him الدهرtime مبتسماsmiling

Glory yearned toward him, rejoicing,
So glory yearned toward him, rejoicing,
and Time gazed at him with a smile.
And time gazed toward him, smiling.
وانصاعتand yielded العلياءhigh honor ترفلtrailing proudly فيin
وانصاعت العلياء ترفل في
بردthe mantle الفخارof glory وتشكرand gives thanks for النعماblessings
برد الفخار وتشكر النعما
Loftiness yielded, sweeping along in
And high honor yielded, trailing proudly in
the robe of pride and giving thanks for blessings.
The mantle of glory and giving thanks for blessings.
بمهذبthrough a refined man طابتwere pure مغارسهhis roots
بمهذب طابت مغارسه
وزكتand flourished معادنsources مجدهof his glory كرماin generosity
وزكت معادن مجده كرما
Through a cultivated noble whose planting grounds grew wholesome,
Through a refined man whose roots were pure,
and the sources of whose glory were purified into generosity—
And whose sources of glory flourished in generosity.
منfrom اسرةa family ملؤاthey filled الزمانthe age علاwith eminence
من اسرة ملؤا الزمان علا
وغدتand became لهمfor them أيامهمtheir days خدماservants
وغدت لهم أيامهم خدما
from a family who filled the age with eminence,
From a family who filled their age with eminence,
and whose very days became their servants.
And whose days became their servants.
خلقواthey were created مصابحas lamps للهدىfor guidance صدعتcleft
خلقوا مصابح للهدى صدعت
ليلthe night الضلالof error وجلتand dispelled الظلماthe darkness
ليل الضلال وجلت الظلما
They were created as lamps of guidance that split apart
They were created as lamps of guidance that cleft
the night of error and dispelled the darkness.
The night of error and dispelled the darkness.
وتهللتand became radiant للمعتفينfor bounty-seekers لهمtheirs
وتهللت للمعتفين لهم
ايدhands يساجلrivals جودهاtheir generosity الديماthe steady rains
ايد يساجل جودها الديما
They beamed upon those who sought their favor:
And for seekers of bounty, radiant were their
hands whose generosity rivaled the rainclouds.
Hands, whose generosity rivals the steady rains.
فكأنso it is as though أيديهمtheir hands بحورseas ندىof generosity
فكأن أيديهم بحور ندى
وكانand were أوجههمtheir faces بدورfull moons سماof heaven
وكان أوجههم بدور سما
As though their hands were seas of bounty,
So their hands were like seas of bounty,
and their faces moons in the sky.
And their faces were full moons of heaven.
منfrom آلthe house of صدرSadr الدينal-Din انif جلسواthey sit
من آل صدر الدين ان جلسوا
كانواthey are الصدورthe foremost men القالةthe speakers العلماthe learned
كانوا الصدور القالة العلما
Of the house of Ṣadr al-Dīn—whenever they sat,
Of the house of Sadr al-Din: whenever they sit,
they held the foremost seats as leaders of the learned.
They are the foremost men, the spokesmen, the learned.
هذاthis is ابوAbu المهديal-Mahdi منتصبstanding upright
هذا ابو المهدي منتصب
للمبتغيfor the seeker سننthe paths الهدىof guidance علماas a landmark
للمبتغي سنن الهدى علما
Here is Abū al-Mahdī, the chosen one,
This is Abu al-Mahdi, standing
a guide for whoever seeks the paths of right guidance:
As a landmark for whoever seeks the paths of guidance.
كهفa cave of refuge يحوطguards المستجيرthe refuge-seeker بهwith him
كهف يحوط المستجير به
فيحلand so he dwells منهfrom him فيin اعزthe most inviolable حمىsanctuary
فيحل منه في اعز حمى
a refuge embracing whoever seeks his protection,
A cave of refuge, guarding whoever seeks shelter with him,
who thereby alights within the strongest sanctuary;
Who then dwells in his most inviolable sanctuary.
الموضحthe clarifier الأحكامthe rulings انif خفيتthey are obscure
الموضح الأحكام ان خفيت
والمجتلىand the revealer ببيانهthrough his exposition الحكماwise sayings
والمجتلى ببيانه الحكما
one who makes judgments clear when they are obscure,
The clarifier of rulings when they are obscure,
and through whose exposition wisdom is unveiled.
Who reveals wise sayings through his exposition.
علمknowledge وحلمand forbearance راسخfirmly rooted وجحىand intellect (apparent typo)
علم وحلم راسخ وجحى
وتقىand piety ونسكand devotion فيهماin both of them اقتسماwere apportioned
وتقى ونسك فيهما اقتسما
Knowledge and forbearance, firm-rooted judgment,
Knowledge, firmly rooted forbearance, and intellect,
piety and devotion—all share equally in him.
And piety and devotion were shared between the two.
هوhe كعبةthe Kaaba المعروفof benevolence راحتهhis palm
هو كعبة المعروف راحته
كالركنlike the Corner مستلماtouched reverently وملتزماand embraced
كالركن مستلما وملتزما
His court is the Kaaba of beneficence,
He is the Kaaba of benevolence; his palm
like the Corner, touched and closely embraced.
Is like the Corner, reverently touched and embraced.
يرقىascends إليهtoward him الفكرthought مرتقياclimbing upward
يرقى إليه الفكر مرتقيا
ويكلand falters عنat اطرائهextolling him عظماbecause of his greatness
ويكل عن اطرائه عظما
Thought climbs toward him, ever ascending,
Thought ascends toward him, climbing upward,
yet falls short of praising him for his grandeur.
Yet falters in praising him, so great is he.
قمرa moon ومنand among ابنائهhis sons شهبshooting stars
قمر ومن ابنائه شهب
تجلوdispel الظلامthe darkness وتكشفand clear الغمماthe clouds
تجلو الظلام وتكشف الغمما
A moon—and among his sons are shooting stars
A moon, and among his sons are shooting stars
that reveal virtues and sweep the clouds away,
That dispel darkness and clear the clouds.
منamong كلevery ملتمعgleaming الجبينbrow كماas though
من كل ملتمع الجبين كما
أوقدتyou kindled فيin جنحthe wing الدجىof deep darkness ضرماa blaze
أوقدت في جنح الدجى ضرما
each one bright of brow, as though
Each with a gleaming brow, as though
a blaze were kindled in the heart of night:
You had kindled a blaze in the dark wing of night.
شهمa valiant man يجردunsheathes منfrom عزيمتهhis resolve
شهم يجرد من عزيمته
عضبkeen الغرارof edge مهنداan Indian-forged sword خذماcutting clean through
عضب الغرار مهندا خذما
a valiant man who draws from his resolve
A valiant man unsheathing from his resolve
a keen-edged Indian sword, sharp and cutting;
A keen-edged Indian-forged sword, cutting clean through.
ومرشحونand fitted لشأوfor the heights of سيدهمtheir lord
ومرشحون لشأو سيدهم
وانand even if استطالhe towers علىabove السهىSuha شمماin loftiness
وان استطال على السهى شمما
one poised to attain the eminence of their master,
And they are fitted to attain their lord's heights,
though his lofty ambition rise beyond al-Suhā.
Even if he towers above Suha in loftiness.
انindeed الشبولlion cubs علىdespite حداثتهاtheir youth
ان الشبول على حداثتها
تقفوfollow ضراغمةthe lions الشرىof al-Shara همماin resolve
تقفو ضراغمة الشرى همما
Lion cubs, even in their youth,
Indeed, lion cubs, despite their youth,
follow the lions of the thicket in aspiration.
Follow the lions of al-Shara in resolve.
ولقدand indeed سماrose high المهديal-Mahdi مرتقياًascending
ولقد سما المهدي مرتقياً
قننpinnacles المعاليof honor الشمlofty والقمماand summits
قنن المعالي الشم والقمما
Al-Mahdī has indeed risen, ascending
And al-Mahdi has indeed risen, ascending
the lofty peaks and summits of distinction.
The lofty pinnacles and summits of honor.
والغرand the illustrious تنشقbreathe in منfrom خلائقهhis character
والغر تنشق من خلائقه
عرفthe fragrance النبوةof prophethood ساطعاwafting أمماclose at hand
عرف النبوة ساطعا أمما
The noble inhale from his character
And the illustrious breathe from his character
the prophetic fragrance, radiant through every reach.
The fragrance of prophethood, wafting close at hand.
اضحتbecame رياضthe gardens العلمof knowledge مونقةlush and lovely
اضحت رياض العلم مونقة
منهthrough him بأزهرwith a radiant one نوؤهhis rain أنسجماpoured down
منه بأزهر نوؤه أنسجما
The gardens of knowledge have grown verdant
The gardens of knowledge have become lush,
through him, as his radiant raincloud streamed;
Through him—a radiant one whose rain poured down.
وخضمand a vast sea فضلof excellence يرتميcasts forth درراًpearls
وخضم فضل يرتمي درراً
غرراًradiant تسمىare called عندناamong us كلماwords
غرراً تسمى عندنا كلما
and a deep sea of merit casts up pearls,
And a vast sea of excellence casts forth pearls,
lustrous pearls that rise forever in our esteem.
Radiant ones, which among us are called words.
ويزينand adorns أوجthe zenith علاهof his eminence مجتلياًdisplaying
ويزين أوج علاه مجتلياً
مثلlike الدراريthe brilliant stars فيin السناradiance شيماvirtues
مثل الدراري في السنا شيما
Adorning the zenith of his glory as he ascends
And he adorns the zenith of his eminence, displaying
are virtues like brilliant stars in the sky.
Virtues like brilliant stars in radiance.
يهنيكmay he gladden you يابنO son of الطاهرينthe pure ones فتىa boy
يهنيك يابن الطاهرين فتى
كالنجمlike a star قارنconjoined with سعدهhis good fortune فسماand so rose high
كالنجم قارن سعده فسما
May a boy bring you joy, O son of the pure—
May this boy bring you joy, O son of the pure ones,
like a star whose happy fortune rose in conjunction.
Like a star conjoined with its good fortune, rising high.
صدقتproved true مخيلةthe promise فضلهof his excellence فغدتso it became
صدقت مخيلة فضله فغدت
عنهon his behalf لساناًa tongue ناطقاًspeaking وفماand a mouth
عنه لساناً ناطقاً وفما
The cloud pregnant with his merit gathered and became
The promise of his excellence proved true, becoming
a speaking tongue and mouth proclaiming him.
A speaking tongue and mouth on his behalf.
ومنand among المخائلthe signs كالمراةlike a mirror بهاin it
ومن المخائل كالمراة بها
شكلthe form القريبof one nearby تراهyou see it مرتسماdepicted
شكل القريب تراه مرتسما
Among the revealing signs is the mirror in which
And some signs are like a mirror in which
the forms of minds are seen reflected.
You see the form of one nearby reflected.
طلعتrose طوالعthe first signs بشرof gladness مقتبلforthcoming
طلعت طوالع بشر مقتبل
مثلlike الحسامthe sharp sword بهby it العناdistress انحسماwas cut away
مثل الحسام به العنا انحسما
The rising signs of approaching joy appeared,
The first signs of approaching gladness have risen,
like a sword by which affliction was cut down.
Like a sword by which distress was cut away.
فاشكرso give thanks for صنايعthe acts لطفof kindness ذيof one endowed with كرمgenerosity
فاشكر صنايع لطف ذي كرم
يعطىgives الجزيلabundant bounty وينشرand spreads النعماblessings
يعطى الجزيل وينشر النعما
So thank the Gracious One, possessor of generosity, for this gift—
So give thanks for the kindly acts of one endowed with generosity,
He who gives abundantly and spreads blessings.
