بأيمنwith the most auspicious طائرomen وأسرand the most gladdening فالِaugury
بأيمن طائر وأسر فالِ
وأعلىand the highest رتبةrank وأجلِّand the most exalted حالِstate
وأعلى رتبة وأجلِّ حالِ
With the most auspicious omen and the gladdest augury,
With the right-winged bird and a captive horse
And the highest rank and the most exalted state,
And the highest rank and most glorious state
شربتyou drank الدّهنthe oil ثمthen خرجتyou emerged منهfrom it
شربت الدّهن ثم خرجت منه
خروجthe emergence of المشرفيthe Mashrafi sword منfrom الصقالِpolishing
خروج المشرفي من الصقالِ
You drank the oil, then emerged from it,
I drank the oil then went out from it
As a Mashrafi sword emerges from polishing.
Like the prominent ones' exit from polishing
تكشَّفhas lifted عنكfrom you ماwhat عانيتyou suffered منهfrom it
تكشَّف عنك ما عانيت منه
كماjust as انكشفcleared away الغَمامthe clouds عنfrom الهلالِthe crescent moon
كما انكشف الغَمام عن الهلالِ
What you suffered from has lifted from you,
What you suffered has been revealed to you
As the clouds cleared away from the crescent moon.
As clouds uncovered the crescent moon
لطولto lasting سلامةwell-being ولطولand to a long عمرlife
لطول سلامة ولطول عمر
بلغتmay they bring بكyou along الطولthe long ones منamong اللياليthe nights
بلغت بك الطول من الليالي
To lasting well-being and a long life,
For long wellbeing and for long life
May the long nights carry you.
You have reached, through nights, great length
وقدand indeed أهديتI have offered ريحاناbasil طريفاnovel
وقد أهديت ريحانا طريفا
بهwith it جاثيتI sat knee to knee with مستمعاone listening to سؤاليmy plea
به جاثيت مستمعا سؤالي
And I have offered a novel sprig of basil,
And you were gifted a gentle basil
With it I sat knee to knee with one listening to my plea.
With it I sat listening to my question
وماand not هوit غيرother than ياءa yāʾ بعدafter حاءa ḥāʾ
وما هو غير ياء بعد حاء
وقدand indeed سبقاboth were preceded بميمby a mīm قبلbefore دالِa dāl
وقد سبقا بميم قبل دالِ
And it is nothing but a yāʾ after a ḥāʾ,
It is but a yaa after haa
Both preceded by a mīm before a dāl.
Preceded by meem before daal
وريحانand the basil of النباتplants يعيشlives يوماfor a day
وريحان النبات يعيش يوما
وليسand does not يموتdie ريحانthe basil of المقالspeech
وليس يموت ريحان المقال
And the basil plant lives for a day,
And the basil plant lives a day
But the basil of speech does not die.
While the basil of speech does not die
ولمand not تكyou were مؤثراpreferring ريحانbasil for سمa nostril
ولم تك مؤثرا ريحان سم
علىover ريحانbasil for أسماعthe ears of الرجالِmen
على ريحان أسماع الرجالِ
And you did not prefer basil for the nostril
And you were not moved by poisonous basil
To basil for the ears of men.
Over the basil of men's hearings
سليلscion of خلافةthe caliphate وغذىand a nursling of ملكٍkingship
سليل خلافة وغذى ملكٍ
جسيمgreat in محامدpraiseworthy qualities منهوكdepleted in مالِwealth
جسيم محامد منهوك مالِ
Scion of the caliphate and nursling of kingship,
Descendant of the caliphate and fed on a kingdom
Great in merits, depleted in wealth.
Lofty glories, spent wealth
