إنif كنتyou were قدalready صَفَّرتِyou made whistle أذنear of الفتىthe young man
إن كنت قد صَفَّرتِ أذن الفتى
فطالماfor often صَفّرَhe made whistle آذاناears
فطالما صَفّرَ آذانا
If you have set the young man’s ear whistling,
If you have filled the youth's ear with lies
He has often set ears whistling.
He has filled many an ear in turn
لاdo not تعجبيbe surprised إنif كنتِyou were كَشْخَنْتِهِyou called him a cuckold
لا تعجبي إن كنتِ كَشْخَنْتِهِ
فإنّماfor only كشختyou called someone a cuckold كشخاناa cuckold
فإنّما كشخت كشخانا
Do not be surprised if you have called him a cuckold:
Do not be surprised if you have defamed him
For you have only called a cuckold a cuckold.
For you have only defamed a defamer
