ياO بديعَwondrous one الدَّلِcoyness والغَنَجِand coquetry
يا بديعَ الدَّلِ والغَنَجِ
لكyou have سلطانdominion علىover المُهَجِhearts
لك سلطان على المُهَجِ
O marvel of coyness and coquetry,
O wonderful in charm and beauty
You have dominion over hearts.
You have power over passions
إنَّindeed بيتاًa house أنتyou ساكنهits inhabitant
إنَّ بيتاً أنت ساكنه
غيرُnot محتاجٍin need إلىof السرجِlamps
غيرُ محتاجٍ إلى السرجِ
Indeed, a house in which you dwell
Indeed you live in a house
has no need of lamps.
Needing no lamps
وجهكyour face المأمولlonged-for حُجَّتناour proof
وجهك المأمول حُجَّتنا
يومon the day يأتيcome الناسthe people بالحججِwith proofs
يوم يأتي الناس بالحججِ
Your longed-for face is our proof
Your hoped-for face is our proof
on the day people come bearing proofs.
The day people come with proofs
لاmay … not أتاحgrant اللّهGod ليto me فرجاًrelief يومon the day أدعوI ask منكof you بالفرحِfor joy
لا أتاح اللّه لي فرجاً يوم أدعو منك بالفرحِ
May God grant me no relief on the day I ask you for joy.
May God not grant me relief, the day I call you in joy
