Time has been treacherous; would that it had not been!

And the fast-breaker's breaking of the fast drove the fasting month away.

And burning grief lodged in your heart, O Muhammad,

Drawing forth the first gushes of your streaming tears.

And two longings divided you at its departure:

The yearning man's grief and the brooding man's need.

So spare your eye, and stuff your heart with despair of it,

And bid farewell to al-Mundhir's table.

May rain bless your days, when you would set out in daylight,

While the sun was high above, not yet plunging down,

Until you knelt down with your broad chest askew,

And stretched out your gullet, its throat jerking,

And your fingertips roamed over the table,

Leaving the table a mirage on a desolate plain.

Woe to the platters at Ibn Farrash's hands, when

He bore down upon them like a mighty, crushing lion.

A practiced expert—when there flashed before him

The table's glad tidings, he began by loosening his waistcloth.

Ibn Farrash and Farrash both wished

That the fasting month would last for months.

He reproaches Islam for its scant endurance,

And you see him praise the Christian convert's count of fasting days.

    سيعود شهركَ قابلاً فاستبشرِ

    Do not perish from longing for the fast;

Your month will return next year, so rejoice.

May your milk never flow, O Muhammad, you youth—

A disgrace when absent, and no ornament when present.
