ولماand when سرتshe drew aside عنهاfrom herself القناعthe veil متيمMutayyam

And when Mutayyam drew aside her veil,
When the veil was lifted from her face, O Tamim,
Al-Anbari departed from her, lovestruck.
The scent of ambergris wafted from her, O Tamim.

Ibn Ubayd Allah saw, while appointed judge
Ibn Ubaydullah saw her, the arbiter,
over her, a gaze of hers appointed judge over him.
Glancing at her with eyes intent upon her.
وكانand he was قديماًformerly كالحgrim الوجهthe face عابساfrowning
فلماbut when رأىhe saw منهاfrom her السفورthe unveiling تبسَّماhe smiled
And formerly he had been grim-faced and frowning;
Formerly he was frowning-faced and stern,
but when he saw her unveiled face, he smiled.
But when he saw her unveiled face, he smiled.
فإنso if يصبُgrows enamored قلبheart العنبريّal-Anbari فقلبهthen his heart
صباgrew enamored باليتامىof the orphans قلبheart يحيىYahya بنson of أكثماAktham
So if al-Anbari’s heart grows enamored, then his heart—
For if the heart of the ambergris idol flows,
enamored of orphans—is the heart of Yahya ibn Aktham.
It flowed with the orphans - the heart of Yahya ibn Aktham.
