    O you who gaze at me with a languid eye,

    Is there any path to union between us?

    God knows that I long

    For a visit from you at the hour of midday rest,

    After you have gone out in the morning in a short tunic,

    Black, swaying as you walk, with a polished sword,

    ل عليها تميلُ كلَّ مميلِ

    And swayed among the processions,

    Strutting before them, leaning every way;

    القصر تلهو بكل قال وقيلِ

    And lingered long at the gate

    Of the palace, amusing yourself with all the talk and gossip;

    د بخبر به ورأى أصيلِ

    And spoke of pursuing game,

    With knowledge of it and sound judgment;

    ع وعلم بمرهفات النصولِ

    Then debated the spearhead and armor,

    And knowledge of finely honed blades;

    And spoke of jousting and spear-thrusts,

    And leaping onto unruly horses.

    Then, when the company dispersed, you came,

    Like a sprig of basil about to wilt.

    فوق صُدغ وجفن طرف كحيلِ

    Dust had clothed you in its own mantle,

    Over your temple and the lid of your kohl-dark eye;

    في مُشرقٍ نقيٍّ أسيلِ

    And beauty's rose appeared upon your cheeks,

    In a radiant, unblemished, smooth complexion;

    Musk exudes from the side of his gazelle-like neck,

    And the white, long-necked doe's throat.

    ك برشف الخدين والتقبيلِ

    So I breathe in the dust the moment I meet you,

    By sipping at your cheeks and kissing them;

    And I unfasten the coat and sword at your waist,

    Gently, with tenderness and soothing care.

    ريف عندي والبر والتبجيلِ

    Then whatever honor you desire is offered,

    Here with me, along with kindness and reverence;

    ب تهادى في مجسد مصقول

    Then I present you like a bride before the drinkers,

    Swaying in a gleaming, richly dyed robe;

    قك كأسا من الرحيق الشمولِ

    Then, after drinking your saliva, I give you

    A cup of pure wine;

    And I sing for you, if you wish, a song

    Neither unpleasant nor wearisome.

    مثل أثناء حيَّةٍ مفتولِ

    The anklet remains upon the cushions,

    Twisted like the coils of a snake;

    Then, when souls stir with longing,

    And lover yearns for lover's nearness,

    What passed between us passed—I will not name it—

    But it was a cure for burning thirst.
