O you whose life my life has ransomed, and for whom it was made

a shield against what you fear and what I fear.

Tell our brother—may God perpetuate his blessing—

    that, though I do not meet him, I meet him;

and that my gaze is bound to the sight of him,

even if his dwelling lies far from mine.

No blessing, old or new, has been mine

but God has favored me with it through him.

Nor has any gracious favor brought me good

but through him I gained its beginning and its end.

God knows that I do not recall him—

how can one recall him who never forgets him?

Count them: is there any virtue Hasan does not possess?

And is there any young man whose bounty equals his?

    والقطر يحصى ولا تحصى عطاياه

    The sea perishes, yet his noble deeds do not;

the raindrops can be counted, but his gifts cannot.

May God show me what my heart pursues,

and guard him, care for him, and preserve him.

Nothing we see is without a likeness,

but you, house of Ibrahim, have no equals.

    I have a beloved; I love

him, whatever may be in him.

I have two deaths, through my loving

him and my hatred of his father.

My hatred of his father is not

less than my hatred of his brother.

I desire the death of them both, just

as I desire to kiss his mouth.
