If my drinking companions do not visit me,

If my beloved does not visit me,

I withdraw alone and take my garden as a drinking companion.

I retreat to my garden for company.

فنادمته خضرا مونقا

يهيِّج لي ذكر أشجانيهْ

يهيِّج لي ذكر أشجانيهْ

So I drink with it, green and lovely;

Its green plants cheer me

It stirs in me the memory of my sorrows.

And remind me of my love's memory.

يقرِّب مفرحة المستلذ

يقرِّب مفرحة المستلذ

ويبعد همِّي وأحزانيهْ

ويبعد همِّي وأحزانيهْ

It brings the joy of pleasure near,

They bring me joy and pleasure

And drives away my worry and my sorrows.

And take away my sorrows and sadness.

أرى فيه مثل مدارى الظباء

أرى فيه مثل مدارى الظباء

تظلّ لأطلائها حانيهْ

تظلّ لأطلائها حانيهْ

I see in it the likeness of gazelles' horns,

I see in it gazelles, shaded by trees

As they remain bowed tenderly toward their fawns.

As though smiling with wonder and delight.

ونور أقاح شتيت النبات

ونور أقاح شتيت النبات

كما ابتسمت عجبا غانيهْ

كما ابتسمت عجبا غانيهْ

And daisy blossoms, scattered in their growth,

And flowers whose scattered glow

Like a beauty smiling in self-admiration.

Is like the eyes of a girl gazing at her lover.

ونرجسه مثل عين الفتاة

ونرجسه مثل عين الفتاة

إلى وجه عاشقها رانيهْ

إلى وجه عاشقها رانيهْ

And its narcissus is like a maiden's eye,

Gazing at her lover's face.
