Would that I knew: is he absent, not in al-Sham—

my dear friend—or is Naʿmān present?

Whatever the case, the absent one may return

one day, and the drowsy one be awakened.

Indeed, ʿAmr and ʿĀmir, our two forefathers,

and Ḥarām stood by the covenant of old.

Are they keeping you back, or is it a shortage of scribes?

    Are you reproachful and angry?

Or is it estrangement, or have you run short of paper—

or is my plight, because of it, of little account to you—

on the day you learned for certain that my legs were crushed,

and the riders brought you that news?

Then they said, 'Your cousin is in affliction

from troubles brought on by the turns of fate.'

So kinship, affection, and companionship groan

amid what the times have brought.

Or do you think a letter is merely a message,

with no payment in it for a seller?

    أمّا فيها فتنضر الأفنان

    Only rootstocks make the branches grow;

as for what is within them, the boughs grow green.

You do not see nabʿ wood or split bow-staves of shawḥaṭ

    where ḍaymarān grows.

    A spear—know this—is merely a shaft,

or like any other stick, were it not for the spearhead.

And when the spearhead is fitted onto it,

it becomes a spear, its shaft swaying.

With it the armoured warrior wards harm off himself,

and with it the coward kills the worthy man.

Do not hold me cheap because I am afflicted

in the leg; the infirm may yet recover.

And know that I am your brother, and that

one like me is not belittled by his brethren.

And know that I have sworn a binding oath,

and few are the oaths in such a matter.

You will see no letter from me, as long as you live,

    other than this—unless Abān moves,

or al-Sibṭī departs from the Mountain

of Snow, and Lebanon becomes a desert,

or the flat-topped hills are seen crossing al-Sham,

and Hauran comes to occupy their place,

or I receive, in a letter from you,

three rolled sheets, with a cord to bind them.

Affection and sincere goodwill dwell only in

the heart, not in what the tongue fashions.

Indeed, the worst sincerity is that which is clothed in leaves

by love, while hatred appears beneath it.
