إنماonly أنتyou فيin ضَلالerror تَهيمwander aimlessly
O you who revile a man like me on Tujib's behalf,
O you who revile me, answer my poem in kind
You do nothing but wander in error.
You wander lost in your delusions
لاdo not تسبّنَنيever revile me فلستَfor you are not ببَذِّيmy equal
إنindeed بَذِّيmy equal منamong الرجالmen الكريمthe noble man
Do not revile me, for you are not my equal;
Do not insult me, for I am no coward
My equal among men is the noble man.
My lineage is of the generous

إنماonly الموتُdeath أنthat يُسبَّbe reviled الزنيمthe baseborn
Indeed, in the reviling of the noble man there is healing;
Insulting the generous heals
Death is only when the baseborn is reviled.
Death is in insulting the vile

I care not whether a he-goat bleated on rugged ground,
I care not if a sad goat butts me
Or a base man satirized me behind my back.
Or a coward slanders me behind my back
