ياO مبتلَىafflicted بالحبِّby love مفدوحاًgrievously stricken
يا مبتلَى بالحبِّ مفدوحاً
لاقيsuffering منfrom الحبِّlove تباريحاagonies
لاقي من الحبِّ تباريحا
O you afflicted by love, grievously stricken,
O one afflicted with love praised,
suffering love's agonies.
Meeting from love wounds,
ألجَمهbridled him الحبُّlove فماso not ينثنيhe turns back
ألجَمه الحبُّ فما ينثني
إلاexcept بكأسwith a cup الشوقlonging مصبوحاgiven a morning drink
إلا بكأس الشوق مصبوحا
Love has bridled him; he does not turn back
Love has bound him, so he does not bend,
except when given a morning cup of longing.
Except with a cup of longing illuminated,
وصارand became ماwhat يُعجبهpleases him مغلقاًclosed
وصار ما يُعجبه مغلقاً
عنهto him وماand what يَكرهُhe hates مفتوحاopen
عنه وما يَكرهُ مفتوحا
And what pleases him has become closed
And what pleases him has become closed,
to him, while what he hates lies open.
To him and what he hates opened,
قدindeed حازهاhas possessed her منthe one who أصبحتshe has come to be عندهwith him
قد حازها من أصبحت عنده
ينالhe enjoys منهاfrom her اthe (article fragment) لشمِّsmelling والرِّيحاand the fragrance
ينال منها ا لشمِّ والرِّيحا
The one she is now with has taken possession of her,
He has gained her, so from her he obtained,
enjoying smelling her and her fragrance:
The scent and the breeze,
خليفةُcaliph اللهGod فسلِّso cast off الهوىpassion
خليفةُ الله فسلِّ الهوى
وعزَّand console قلباًa heart منكof yours مجروحاwounded
وعزَّ قلباً منك مجروحا
God's caliph—so cast off your passion,
Representative of God, so ask the passion,
and console your wounded heart.
And fortify a heart from you wounded.
