O Salm, our neighbor at al-Ghamr, may you be greeted—
O Salm, our neighbor at al-Ghamr, may you be greeted
O neighbor's ladder drenched with clouds, I greeted
greeted by us, and drenched by the steady rainclouds’ downpour.
On our behalf, and may the clouds’ gentle rainfall water you.
You from us while clouds watered with thunder roared

The desert lizard, when it seeks the sea’s depths, shares the same fate;
The spiny-tailed lizard, when it seeks the deep sea, is ensnared;
When the hyena intends to attack together
and the whale perishes upon the smooth, trackless wastes.
And the fish perishes in the barren deserts.
And the whale perishes among the hopes of the dreamer

By God, one kind will always cleave to its own kind—
By God, one kind will never take to her kind
By God, it will never adapt to its shape
until someone can reconcile the desert lizard and the whale.
Until the spiny-tailed lizard and the fish are brought together.
Until it makes peace between the hyena and the whale
