Is there a messenger—may God set his affairs right,
Oh messenger, may God reform your mind,
And may he be granted whatever he sought for his needs—
And grant you all that you hope to find,

Who will convey a message to the Commander of the Faithful,
Convey a message to the Commander of the Faithful,
Claimed as his own by one who dictates, while another writes,
That another scribe can unravel,

Informing him that between us remains,
Are bonds neither tended nor brought close;
Bonds that cannot be maintained or ascertained,

And that Yazid was in a place apart,
And Yazid was in a garden taking leisure,
And removed from what Taghlib practices:
Far from the affairs of Taghlib's seizure,

Men whose skins are unscathed by foul speech,
Men healthy of skin against the enemy's blade,
And tongues [unclear word in the supplied text]—where do they go?
And tongues like banners - where can they invade?

And at times I am driven into it, so I mount.
Yet sometimes charge forth when I'm cable,
