ذُمِمتُI was censured ولمand not تُحمَدyou were praised وأدركتُand I attained حاجتيmy need
ذُمِمتُ ولم تُحمَد وأدركتُ حاجتي
تولّىundertook سواكماsomeone other than you two أجرهاits reward واصطناعَهاand its bestowal as a favor
تولّى سواكما أجرها واصطناعَها
I was censured, you were not praised, and I obtained what I needed.
I was blamed though not praised, and got what I wanted.
Someone other than you two gained its reward and bestowed it as a favor.
Another took care of it and did it instead of you.
أبىprevented لكfor you فعلdoing الخيرgood رأيa judgment مقصرshortsighted
أبى لك فعل الخير رأي مقصر
ونفسand a soul أضاقnarrowed اللهُGod فيin الخيرgoodness باعهاits reach
ونفس أضاق اللهُ في الخير باعها
A shortsighted judgment kept you from doing good,
Your unwilling spirit refused to do good.
and a soul whose reach for goodness God has narrowed.
A soul made narrow by God sold itself.
إذاwhen هيit حثَّتهurged him علىtoward الخيرgoodness مرّةًonce
إذا هي حثَّته على الخير مرّةً
عصاهاhe disobeyed it وإنand if همتit resolved بسوءٍon evil أطاعهاhe obeyed it
عصاها وإن همت بسوءٍ أطاعها
When it urged him toward goodness once,
When it urged you to do good once,
he disobeyed it; but if it resolved on evil, he obeyed it.
You disobeyed it, but if it intended evil, you obeyed.
سيكفيكwill take care of it for you ماwhat ضيعتyou neglected منهاof it وإنماand only
سيكفيك ما ضيعت منها وإنما
يضيعsquander الأمورaffairs سادرواthe heedless منthose who أضاعهاneglected them
يضيع الأمور سادروا من أضاعها
What you neglected of it will be taken care of for you—for only
What you have wasted is enough. But
the heedless among those who neglect them let affairs go to waste—
Only the incapable waste what they are given.
ولايةthe patronage منof the one who ولاكassigned you سوءthe hardship بلائهاof its trial
ولاية من ولاك سوء بلائها
وولىand assigned سواكsomeone other than you أجرهاits reward واصطناعهاand its bestowal as a favor
وولى سواك أجرها واصطناعها
through the patronage of the one who assigned you the hardship of its trial
The guardianship of one who gave you over to your own evil
and assigned someone else its reward and its bestowal.
Was assumed by another, who did it and made it.
