ألا أبلغ معاوية بن حرب

فقد أبلغتم الحنق الصدورا

فقد أبلغتم الحنق الصدورا

Lo, convey this to Muʿāwiya ibn Harb:

Lo, tell Muawiya son of Harb:

O convey to Mu'awiya ibn Harb

for you have caused rancor to reach the breasts.

For you have filled breasts with rage.

That you have conveyed the rancor in your chests

تقونَ بنا صدوركمُ المنايا

تقونَ بنا صدوركمُ المنايا

عست بكم الدوائرُ أن تدورا

عست بكم الدوائرُ أن تدورا

You use us to shield your breasts from death—

You shield your breasts from death with us;

You meet us with your death-bound chests

may fortune’s reversals turn against you—

May the turns of fortune turn upon you,

May the cycles of fate turn against you

بحربٍ لاترى الأمويِّ فيها

بحربٍ لاترى الأمويِّ فيها

ولا الثقفي إلا مستجيرا

ولا الثقفي إلا مستجيرا

in a war where you will see the Umayyad

In a war where you see no Umayyad,

With a war in which you see no Umayyad

and the Thaqafī only seeking refuge.

Nor any Thaqafi, save as a seeker of refuge.

Nor Thaqafi except as a refugee
