Tell the sons of al-Ashtar, if you come to them:
Tell the sons of al-Ashtar, if you come to them:
What befell the sons of Banu Wāsiʿ,
What is the matter with the sons of Banū Wāsiʿ,

while the lion towered over him with its fangs,
While the lion overpowers him with its fangs,

Dust-smeared in his fresh blood,

When they abandoned him as he called to them
by ties of kinship, both close and distant?
By ties of kinship, close and distant?

May the All-Merciful never raise your fallen man,

nor weaken the strength of him who struck him down.
Nor weaken the strength of the one who felled him.

One evening, the mules carried Maslama away.
The mules departed with Maslama one evening;
So graze, Fazāra—may the pasture bring you no joy.
So graze, Fazāra—may the pasture bring you no joy!
