وأصبح لم يؤشب ببعض الكبائر
And truly fortunate is one who spends a night
If you wake up from a night without committing grave sins
and wakes untainted by any grave sins.
Then do not fret over minor faults, my friend

هضيمة مولى المرء جدع المناخر
So let your dependent not be wronged in your care, for
Your neighbor's insults cannot harm you
wronging a man's dependent is nothing but mutilating his nostrils.
If he reviles you for trivial things

وجارك لا يذممك ان مسبة
علىupon المرءa man فيamong الأدنينthose nearest him ذمّthe censure of المجاورthe neighbor
على المرء في الأدنين ذمّ المجاور
And let your neighbor not reproach you, for it is a disgrace
Watch your words before those who walk away
for a man among those nearest him to be censured by his neighbor.
For you cannot take back what you have uttered

And if you speak, know what you say, [apparently: for it passes]
Like an archer cannot reclaim an arrow he shot
to a listener among morning visitors, and a reteller.
Once it has flown beyond his grasp

شأتك وزلت عن فكاهة فاغر
For you cannot take back an utterance
If you oppose people, always be on guard
that has outstripped you and slipped from a gaping speaker's banter,
No good comes from being unwatchful

just as no archer, after loosing his arrow,
Who does not compromise in many matters
can recall it before it strikes.

علىon حذرguard لاno خيرgood فيin غيرone not حاذرwary
على حذر لا خير في غير حاذر
If you make enemies of men, never cease
You see people as creations, but eyes have their share
to be on your guard; there is no good in one who is unwary.
And none can grasp the intricacies of things

And whoever does not conciliate others in many matters
Like the water of the sea, its taste you cannot stand
is bitten by fangs and trampled by a hoof.

You see a well-formed man, giving the eye its share,
A man of virtue and wisdom walks erect
yet he is unversed in the intricacies of affairs.
Not forceful among the people, but upright

He is like seawater, which you cannot swallow,
An eyelid worn by lengthy wakefulness
though every beholder admires it lying calm.

And you meet a well-born man of excellent judgment, whose body,
He lives with his eyes, not grasping what is beyond reach
when he walks among the people, is not imposing.

Likewise, a scabbard grows shabby from long remaining
Waging war without wealth, like one boldly diving
over a blade laid open at both edges, keen to cut.
Into the sea without skill as a swimmer

Seeking affection from one who does not love him
is like one running on his feet to catch a bird.

And one who calls down war without wealth
Offering excuses, he is blamed
is like one plunging into the sea without skill.
Like a trustee who cannot provide in plenty

And one seeking the love of someone who does not love him
When traveling, mind your praise, and know
is like one apologizing one day to someone who will not excuse him.

And one making an excuse that turns into blame
Oblige their requests, and say you ransom
is like the guardian of orphans whose possessions are scant.
Yourself for those who scorn the unkempt

So, when you travel, take care to earn praise, and know well
If you have wealth, use it to do good
that the caravan's praise is the traveler's portion.
And lift the name of those in graves

And comply with them in what they wish, and say to them:
For I have seen wealth perish, while its name lasts
'Let the camels' weariness be a ransom for what you sought.'
Like shade that protects from the raging heat

So if you have a share of wealth, seek
through it reward, and exalt the memory of those in the graveyards.

For I have seen wealth perish, while its remembrance
is like shade: the shade shields you from the heat of scorching middays.
