    لم تَزَلْ بالحبِّ في اللهِ قريبا

    You have not vanished, nor become a stranger;

Through love for God's sake, you remain close.

O companion in sorrow, in an age when we saw

Afflictions wrought by our enemies' oppression,

And saw weakness among the sons of Islam,

And retreat, while the aggressor leapt forward.

O Ibn Barud, in gunpowder, when

It burns the aggressor, lies a fragrance exuding perfume.

O brother in Islam, O companion of rhymes,

O friend of the written word that refuses to melt away,

O sharer in the servanthood of a name

Made blessed and beloved by the Most Merciful,

O friend of eloquent Arabic, we fashioned

With it, from our rhymes, a fresh, lovely garden,

And adopted it as an Arabic tongue

That delights the poet and the orator among us.

If your body is absent from us, we have

Your sweet remembrance, which refuses to vanish.

And from your rhymes we have a breeze

That revives the flowers and stirs the nightingale.

Your overflowing poetry is still a sharp sword

That slays the fear that shrouds hearts.

Whenever the reciter chants it, he finds

In it the voice of truth, bringing peoples to life.

Al-Aqsa recognizes your rhymes as armies

That have so often waged wars against the aggressor.

And Gaza sees in your poetry a spirit

Of loyalty that still pervades the paths.

With faith, poetry becomes an army

That wards off tyranny and calamities from us.

It defeats the delusion that destroys reason,

And the lies that enfold hearts.

O you who have departed from us on a road

That no one who walks it can ever return from,

We have entrusted all those we have lost

To a forgiving God who erases sins.

Thus a human being in this world is a sunrise

That, at the hour of birth, summons sunset.

O Ibn Barud, here is my prayer for you:

A prayer that calls down the rain in torrents.

May God make the grave a light for you,

A garden granting you a fresh, tender bough,

And grant you comfort in your grave, until

The grave becomes a spacious home for you.

A person is but a part of his brother

When he becomes beloved for God's sake.
