Take your time; the waves in the sea are roaring,

and through God, not through people, are needs met.

    أقاومُ شكي عندها وأُغالِب

    I see strange things on your part concerning me;

at such times I resist my doubt and strive to overcome it.

I see cheerful warmth in you when we meet,

through it the accusation falls away and the waters run clear.

And a smile of affection from you delights me,

and gracious words no impurities have tainted.

And you counsel me as one who loves me would, and only

through the counsel of the pure-hearted are faults erased.

Yet I am distressed by your conduct whenever

a duty calls me to spread principles.

As though you had not felt the purity of my feelings,

and the deep darkness had not lifted from your eyes.

Why do I doubt the soundness of my intent?

Then alas for the world's ruin when a friend doubts!

And by your Lord, I have not sent forth my poetry for a dubious purpose,

nor have desires diverted me from my concerns.

I drive the armies of delusion away from me, and in my hand

is a keen sword of faith in God that strikes.

    على غير بابي تستقرُّ العناكبُ

    And I am not one around whom suspicion is woven;

the spiders settle at a door other than mine.

And I am not one whose reason wealth steals away,

nor am I one whom positions of power take captive.

I lead my processions along the path of righteousness,

when processions fling travelers far afield.

And in my palm I carry a reed pen, which I unsheathe

against every base idea, and I fight.

And were it not for my following the Messenger and his path,

the vessels would have sailed with my poetry into invective.

O brother of truth, do not open a path for your suspicion

toward me, for I strive tirelessly for God's pleasure.

And I commend what is right when it appears,

and I reproach anyone who fails to act well.

And I wash my mistakes with the waterfall of my repentance.

I repent to my Lord, and no penitent has failed.

    كلانا مُحبٌ للصلاح وراغبُ

    O brother of truth, there is no rift between me and you;

we both love righteousness and long for it.

Both of us belong to the faith of the Guardian,

when doctrines carry the deluded away.

I express my reproach in proportion to loyalty,

and in my eyes, the loyal have their ranks.

And without the purity of affection in the soul, you would not find

a friend who offers reproach when a friend acts unjustly.

So set your heart at ease about my state, for I

oppose and befriend according to the path of guidance.

    ومن أجلِهِ أرضى وفيهِ أُغاضِبُ

    And to God belongs my inner feeling, and to God its pulse;

and for His sake I am pleased, and for His sake I show anger.

O brother of truth, pardon me: my poetry conveys

my heart's message, and the rhymes are riding camels.

I send them through every land, and thus quenched

by them are thirsty souls, and talents are revealed.

I sent you poetry whose words shine

with clarity, for no sediment lies at the bottom of my poetry.

O brother of truth, everything perishes, and only

by what the outcomes lead to are we measured.

Our sincerity and our certainty endure for us,

and everything else on this earth passes away.
