    لا تزدْني فوق الأَنين أَنينا

    O glow of love, do not deepen my longing;

Do not add more moaning to my moans.

    I still draw forth rhymes,

And with them soothe a buried longing.

That ripened its art, they would not have reproached us.

Poetry is but a painting, colored

By the hand of our dreams with what saddens us.

It comes from us, and we from it, yet

It is scorched by us, as it scorches us.

In an age that stirs suspicions within us.

In an age seized by claims,

And complaining of the rumor-mongers' methods.

The waves terrified the ships within its expanse.

And you will know that we have grown weary,

And thirsty, though water is in our hands.

And that we have inclined toward submission,

And stood while our weakness overtook us.

And as peoples, creditors and debtors.

Miserly with noble deeds and proud refusal.

When I call to those whose affairs concern us.

Perhaps a voice will lift the dust from us,

And clarify our dreams and show us:

O rulers among us, a greeting of peace

That makes our words to one another measured.

Who made terror dwell in Gaza and Jenin.

    Hear us, for we carry love;

If we lost it, we would not be sincere counselors.
