دعونيlet me، بأهدابيwith my eyelashes، وبالدَّمعand with tears يَهْمِلُstreaming
وبالحبِّand with love منfrom قلبيmy heart المتيَّمenraptured، أَغسِلُI wash
Let me—with my lashes and with tears streaming,
Let me, with my eyelids, and with the tear that flows down,
And with love from my enraptured heart—wash.
And with the love from my sad heart, wash away
دعونيlet me بخدِّيwith my cheek أمْسَحُI wipe الأرضthe ground إننيindeed I
أرىI see مسحَهاwiping it بالخدِّwith the cheek مَجْداًglory يُؤثَّلُis firmly founded
Let me wipe the ground with my cheek, for I
Let me with my cheek wipe the earth for I see
See wiping it with my cheek as firmly rooted glory.
Wiping it with my cheek as glorious honor
هناhere الكونُthe universe، إنيindeed I أبصرI behold الكونَthe universe هاright هناhere
كنقطةِlike a point of ضَوْءٍlight فيin الشرايينthe arteries تُشْعَلُis kindled
Here is the universe; I behold the universe right here,
Like a speck of light in the veins ignited
Like a point of light kindled in the arteries.
Threads of passions and love being spun
هناhere أُبصِرُI behold الآفاقَthe horizons منfrom حولِaround مُهجتيmy heart
خيوطاًthreads منof الأشواقِlongings والحبِّand love تُفْتَلُare twisted
Here I behold the horizons around my heart
I flip it in my palm, and carry
As threads of longing and love twisted together.
It tells the news of the past time
هناhere تصغرgrows small الدنياthe world، هناhere يَقْصُرshortens المدىthe expanse
هناhere كلُّall ماthat نرجوwe hope for منof الخيرgoodness يُقْبِلُdraws near
Here the world grows small; here the expanse contracts.
Summarizing at times and detailing at others
Here all the goodness we hope for draws near.
Let me handshake here my hand of pride
هناhere أصبحhas become التاريخُhistory فيin حَجْمِthe size of مقلتيmy eye
أقلِّبهُI turn it over فيin راحتيَّmy two palms، وأَحْمِلُand I carry
Here history has become the size of my eye;
And narrate the tales of glory and send
I turn it over in my two palms and carry it.
Let me flip here the book of time
يحدِّثُit recounts أخبارَthe tales of الزمانِtime الذيthat مضىhas passed
فيُوجِزُso it summarizes أحياناsometimes وحيناand at times يفصِّلُit elaborates
It recounts the tales of times gone by,
In it are signs that will astonish
So at times it is brief, and at times it tells in detail.
With their hands the building rises and completes
دعونيlet me أُصَافحْI shake hands with هاright هناhere كفَّthe hand of عزَّتيmy dignity
وأرويand I recount رواياتِthe tales of الشموخِloftiness وأُرْسِلُand I send forth
Let me clasp, right here, the hand of my dignity,
And here was the best of creations, Muhammad
And recount the tales of loftiness and send them forth.
Praying, humbly dressed in his robes
دعونيlet me أقلِّبْI turn over هاright هناhere دفترthe book of المدىthe expanse
ففيهfor within it منof الآياتِthe signs ماwhat سوفَwill يُذْهِلُastound
Let me leaf, right here, through the book of the expanse,
And a blessed place for the lover settled
For within it are signs that will astound.
A vast space in which I flew soaring
هناhere كانwas (إبراهيمُIbrahim) كانَwas هُناhere (ابنُهhis son)
بكفَّيْهماby their two hands يعلوrises البناءُthe building ويكْمُلُand is completed
Here was Ibrahim; here was his son;
Praying in all directions and drawing near
By their hands the building rises and is completed.
Is this not the heart of life and its pulse
وكانand was هناhere خيرُthe best of البراياcreation محمدٌMuhammad
يناجيhe communes in prayer وفيand in ثَوْبِthe robe of التعبُّدِdevotion يَرْفُلُhe walks in flowing robes
And here was Muhammad, the best of all creation,
And its pure spring from which we drink
Communing in prayer, walking in the flowing robe of devotion.
You turned, the blessed place welcomed you
هناhere انسكبتْpoured forth أَنْوارُlights of خيرٍgoodness ورحمةٍand mercy
وطابَand became pleasant مقامٌa dwelling للمحبِّfor the lover ومَنْزِلُand an abode
Here lights of goodness and mercy poured forth,
I entered a noble and pure interior
And a dwelling and abode grew pleasant for the lover.
And lived a profound feeling that cannot be faulted
فضاءan expanse فسيحٌvast طِرْتُI flew فيهin it محلِّقاًsoaring
أصلِّيI pray إلىtoward كلِّall الجهاتِdirections وأَقْبِلُand I draw near
A vast expanse in which I flew, soaring,
As if on a star that shone alone
I pray toward every direction and draw near.
While all other stars set below
أليسis not هناhere قَلْبُthe heart of الحياةِlife ونَبْضُهاand its pulse
ومَنْهَلُهاand its wellspring الصافيclear الذيwhich منهfrom it نَنْهَلُwe drink
Is not the heart of life here, and its pulse,
I ascended to it, God paved its ladder
And its clear wellspring, from which we drink?
So ask not how its rain pours
هناhere فُتِحَتْwere opened كلُّall الجهاتِdirections، فحيثماso wherever
توجَّهْتَyou turn، وافاكَmeets you المقامُthe place المفضَّلُfavored
Here all directions were opened, so wherever
And it made me befriend life and its people
You turn, the favored place comes to meet you.
A deep feeling in my heart that delves
دخلتُI entered إلىinto جَوْفٍan interior كريمٍnoble مُطَهَّرٍpurified
فعشتso I experienced منof الإحساسِfeeling مالاwhat cannot يُعَلَّلُbe explained
I entered a noble, purified interior,
And around it courtyards of endless mercy
So I experienced feelings that cannot be explained.
And branches of faith and safety that shade
كأنِّيas though I علىupon نَجْمٍa star تألَّقَshone وَحْدَهon its own
ومنand from دونهbeneath it كلُّall الكواكبِthe planets تَأْفُلُset
As though I were upon a star that shone alone,
Minutes ten, like centuries in status
While beneath it all the planets set.
And greatest on the scale, in value and weight
صَعدتُI ascended إليهاto it، سلَّمmay He safeguard اللهُGod قلبَهاits heart
فلاso do not تسألواask عنabout غيثهاits rain كيفhow يَهْطِلُit pours down
I ascended to it—may God safeguard its heart—
And like lightning on the scale of my longing and yearning
So do not ask how its rain pours down.
Flashing swiftly to the eyes then departing
وَلَجتُI entered فأنسانيso it made me forget الحياةَlife وأهلَهاand its people
شعورٌa feeling عميقٌdeep فيin فؤاديَmy heart يُوْغِلُpenetrates deeply
I entered, and was made to forget life and its people
It is the glorious Kaaba, a symbol and a landmark
By a deep feeling burrowing into my heart.
We value its meaning, and do not implore
ومنand from حولهاaround it الساحاتُthe courtyards أَفْياءُshades of رحمةٍmercy
وأغصانُand branches of إيمانٍfaith وأَمْنٍand safety تُظَلِّلُgive shade
And around it, the courtyards are shades of mercy,
As if with the best of prophets before it
And branches of faith and safety give shade.
Saying to it words, on which we depend
دقائقُminutes عَشْرٌten كالقرونِlike centuries مكانةًin stature
وأَعْظَمُand greater فيin الميزانthe balance شأناًin significance وأَثْقَلُand heavier
Ten minutes, like centuries in stature,
It has sublime sanctity with God
And greater in significance on the scales, and heavier.
And its station with God is revered
وكالبرقِand like lightning فيin ميزانِthe scales of شوقيmy longing ولهفتيand my yearning
يَلُوحُit appears سريعاًswiftly للعيونto the eyes ويَرْحَلُand departs
And like lightning on the scales of my longing and yearning,
And greater than it in sanctity is the blood
It flashes swiftly before the eyes and departs.
Of a Muslim unjustly and criminally spilled
هيit is الكعبةُthe Kaaba الغرَّاءُradiant رَمْزٌa symbol ومَعْلمٌand a landmark
نقدِّرwe esteem معناهاits meaning، ولاand do not نتوسَّلُseek intercession
It is the radiant Kaaba, a symbol and a landmark;
It is the glorious Kaaba, how immaculate its soil
We honor its meaning, but do not seek intercession through it.
And how pure its walls washed with light
كأنيas though I بخيرِwith the best of الأنبياءِthe prophets أمامَهاbefore it
يقولsays لهاto it قولاًa saying، عليهon it المُعَوَّلُreliance
It is as though I see the best of the prophets before it,
I entered it, and the dawn is a poem
Speaking to it words to be relied upon:
With its white rhythms the bulbul chants
لهاit has حُرْمةٌsanctity عندin the sight of الإلهGod عظيمةٌgreat
ومقدارهاand its worth عندin the sight of الإلهِGod مَبَجَّلُrevered
It has great sanctity in the sight of God,
By God, what pleasure I felt inside it
And its worth is revered in the sight of God.
And by God its meaning that cannot be interpreted
وأعظمُand greater منهاthan it حُرْمةًin sanctity دَمُthe blood of مسلمٍa Muslim
إراقتُهshedding it ظُلْمٌinjustice وجُرْمٌand a crime مُؤَصَّلُdeep-rooted
Yet a Muslim's blood has greater sanctity than it;
So let me, with my eyelids, and with the tear that flows down,
Shedding it is injustice and a deeply rooted crime.
And with the love from my sad heart, wash away
هيit is الكعبةُthe Kaaba الغرَّاءradiant، ماhow أَضْوَعَfragrant الشَّذاthe scent
وماand how أطهرَpure الجُدْرانَthe walls بالنُّورwith light تُغْسَلُare washed
It is the radiant Kaaba—how fragrant the scent!
And how pure the walls, washed with light!
وَلَجْتُI entered إليهاinto it، والصَّباحُand morning قصيدةٌa poem
بأوزانِهاin its meters البيضاءِwhite يَصْدَحُsings aloud بُلْبْلُa nightingale
I entered it while morning was a poem,
In its white meters a nightingale sings aloud.
فللهِso to God ماwhat لاfirst fragment of 'I found' قيتُsecond fragment of 'I found' فيهاwithin it منof الرِّضاcontentment
وللهِand to God معناهاits meaning الذيwhich لاnot يُؤَوَّلُis interpreted
So to God belongs the contentment I found within it,
And to God belongs its meaning, which admits no interpretation.
