    You taught me beautiful conceit,

    Ever since you lit the lamp for love.

    أنتِ أسقيتني بهِ السَّلْسَبيلا

    You nourished me with honey from love;

    Through it, you gave me Salsabil to drink.

    أنتِ صيرتِها لعشْقي حُقُولا

    You taught me the madness of rhymes;

    You made them fields for my passion.

    You are my solace; whenever I sought distance,

    What I sought to attain was the impossible.

    You taught me the conceit of a lover

    Who tasted love—so let there be beautiful patience.

    Do not say, 'I love you,' for I

    Grow more curious whenever you say it.

    It is, if you only knew, a flame of fire

    That caused a beautiful sting in the heart.

    Do not say, 'I love you,' for I

    Indeed find its impact heavy upon me.

    Keep your beautiful lips in silence,

    Before the suffering grows long,

    ويهُزَّ الجريحُ سيفاً صَقِيلا

    Before quiet turns to clamor,

    And the wounded one brandishes a polished sword;

    ضارِباتٍ وَوَقْعُهُنَّ صَلِيلا

    Before letters turn to swords,

    Striking, their blows a ringing clang;

    Before rhymes turn to horses,

    Unruly, their melody a neigh.

    لكِ شعري دوحاً ، وظِلاًّ ظليلا

    As for me, were it not for my people's sorrows,

    My verse would become spreading trees and deep shade for you;

    And the letters of the rhymes would turn to flowers,

    And their admixture would become ginger.
