    Rejoice in ruin after ruin,

    O minds robbed of reason!

O hearts that hatred has possessed,

so they are by nature given to terrorism!

O blinded eyes, in which there is nothing

to make clear to them the path of right!

I am the destination of the Prophet’s night journey; still flows

from it the light of the Night Journey above my domes.

When he led the prophets in prayer, there shone forth

in my sky the harmony of loved ones.

And my minarets shone forth, and my call to prayer,

and my question about guidance, and my answer.

And the upright faith shone forth, far removed

from the claims of the lying deceiver.

Every handspan in my courtyard bears an inscription

of my grandeur, despite the length of my torment.

O Jews of delusion, you are a discord

in my narrative, and a boil upon my skin.

    أنتم الصفر تائهاً في حسابي

    You are the disease coursing through my veins;

you are the zero lost in my reckoning.

    فمتى يُبهج الضياء رحابي ؟

    You are the night, black and impenetrably dark;

so when will the light gladden my precincts?

And when will the full moon shine resplendent in my sky,

and when will the stars wash away my melancholy?

And when will my windows rejoice

in my breeze, and my doors grow ecstatic?

And when will I reclaim from you my robe

and my cloak, and recover my garments?

And when will the lamps drink oil

from my deliverance, with which my prayer niche is pleased?

And when will the minarets raise my voice

without fear of the wolves’ onslaughts?

And when will they cross the barriers toward me

to offer prayer within me—my young men?

How can my purity and cleanliness escape

from apes that trample me, and dogs?

How can I escape the trenches that have become

a cancer in my soil through their treachery?

O Jews of killing and displacement, you are

the language of violence in the laws of the jungle.

The calf testified that you have not risen

above the dispositions and traits of beasts.

Since Moses, and since Aaron, you have been

passing one another the vilest cups.

O Jews of delusion, you are letters

of loss; my book knew nothing of them.

You are death, and certainty is my life.

You are drought, and defiance is my cloud.

Like devils, you steal my letters

from my tongue—so be scorched by my meteor!

“Rejoice in ruin” has become a slogan

rising above the “Synagogue of Ruin.”
