Tears defied my eye and did not fall,

and my heart is scorched by sorrow's fire.

O my eye, I am in need

of my eye's tears, so do not withhold them.

For nothing washes sorrow from my mind

except tears; through them my grief is dispelled.

O you who dwell in my heart, when

will you bring relief and find rest, O you who preoccupy me?

And where shall I see you on our path,

walking true to your first pledge?

    فكيف تحولت كالمنجل

    I carried you in my heart as a sprig of sweet basil;

so how did you become like a sickle?

You mowed down the happiness in my mind,

and neither paused nor granted respite.

Indeed, you were like honey in taste,

then you became more bitter than colocynth.

O traveler in pursuit of your whims,

contemplate my longing, and do not depart.

    فياليت أنك لم تنزل

    You descended to the mountain's foot in surrender;

oh, if only you had not descended!

And if only you had perceived what

lay beyond the mirage, and had not been heedless.

    فهل كنت تبحث عن مقتلي؟

    And you made peace with me, then waged war on me;

so were you searching for my fatal weak spot?

And how did you turn the springtime of hopes

into autumn, though you had been like a brook?

Indeed, the plants in my garden have withered,

and but for your coldness, they would not have withered.

So how can I extend a hand to you

while your arrow is still in the joint?

O my friend, do not leave me on

the path of doubts, with no refuge.

If people are sincere in their striving,

then they will advance toward what is better.
