With purity of heart, life grows sweet,

and hearts overflow with great love.

Like the sun, its rising sweeps the darkness away,

and it darkens the horizons when it sets.

In the heart lies the measure of people; if it becomes pure,

then life is serene, and the distant is near.

And if it congeals with grudges and desire,

then the heart is an empty, overturned cup.

I say to everyone who has within his soul

something that clouds and taints its serenity:

This world is nothing but a swing,

    where people stumble and leap.

Our standard in it is our sacred law, which

holds an answer for the petitioners' pleas.

And patience in it is a little boat; however high

a wave rises, it keeps plowing through and crossing it.

If people speak an unjust person's words about you,

then those words are recorded with our God.

Do not be distressed by an insolent insulter,

ever, for it is the insulter who is defeated.

Leave aside whoever shows his smile over

hidden malice, while the poison of his tongue pours out.

And look to the best of people, Muhammad:

how much reproach he suffered from his people.

They insulted him, even regarding the purity of his honor,

and assailed him, though he was honored and beloved.

Two kinds are hard to win approval from,

however you try: an envious person and a habitual liar.

I say, and in the veins of my poem

are hope and a voice dear to loyalty:

    O all who wind a scholar's turban,

that is a trust, and God is watchful.

Gather what is scattered, for we are in a world

that byways have scattered away from the straight path.

Around you, O people, are a thousand projectiles,

hurled by accusations of sinfulness and by Westernization.

And from overzealousness and extremism around you

comes a fire whose blaze burns among minds.

So how long will mutual strife remain among you,

and how long will the anguished groan?

Knowledge is the inheritance of prophethood and guidance,

and good character and refinement belong to its bearers.

They are the generations' role models; how can

a generation follow one who circles in discord?

There is no good in knowledge if it is not tended by

reason, and no wise person cares for it.

How many, in life, in its past and present,

are scholars with consciences full of holes!

How can abundant knowledge benefit a young man

when his heart is veiled from his forbearance?

In Islam's way lies the polishing of our souls,

and to it we return when calamities strike.

    ما أسعدَ الإنسانَ حينَ يُصيبُ

    So if we act rightly, right action is the goal;

how happy a person is when he acts rightly!

And if we stumble over a sin's rope

one day, then we repent to God.

We seek forgiveness from God the Magnificent, for He—

glory be to Him—is the All-Forgiving when we turn back in repentance.

And through His pardon souls ascend, and radiant grows

the face of life, and correction is done well.

    O all who wind a scholar's turban,

do not let people's expectations be disappointed.

The peaks of ice seem towering to us,

but beneath the rays they melt.
