Your mercy, I beg you—for one thing calls another to mind.

So do not be surprised, O Hindh, that I have grown fretful.

    I saw at al-Ashshar a little girl,

like my daughter Zamzam, her expression altered.

and seas streamed from both eyes onto my face.

O Zamzam, I have not forgotten you for a single hour

of time; do I ever cross your heart?

O Zamzam, if you yourself have indeed forgotten me

for play, your neglect makes me remember you all the more.

O Zamzam, if you see all my family,

I am their father, not one to be forgotten and slighted.

yet I do not forget, even if I am buried.

Can I forget your weeping when you came out one evening

for me? This remembrance breaks the heart.

We shall both find solace, but by nature

frailty is yours, and it brings you no distress.

While I, from my longing for you and my burning grief,

have grown so wasted that perhaps I cannot be seen.

You forgot the Ottoman piastres—how I showered them

on you, never stinting on any expense for you.

And every day a quarter of a Rumi coin would reach

your hands; I would buy watermelons and break them open.

I would go out in heat whose harm you knew,

and bring you watermelon, never too proud to do so.

O daughter of my heart, this is no favor

held over you; I only remind you of it.

Your food is a blend of milk and sugar.

and I have prized lengths of cloth from India.

    إذا جئت آتيك بذاك وأكثر

    And all that has been mentioned is stored away for you;

when you come, I shall bring you that and more.

And do not give A'ish a mustard seed of it,

nor Āmin; it is all to be kept with you.
