من لدهرٍ عنّي عَمي فدعاني
للمعمّىto the riddle أرنوI gaze للأعيَنَينat the two wide-eyed ones
للمعمّى أرنو للأعيَنَين
Who can contend with Time, which grew blind to me, then called me
When time blinded me and called me
To the riddle, while I gaze at the two wide-eyed ones?
to show the sightless a guide -
مدّstretched out رجليهits two legs تحتbeneath أحسنthe finest شيءthing
مدّ رجليه تحت أحسن شيء
حيثwhere أضحىbecame أحدىone بلاwithout رجلينtwo legs
حيث أضحى أحدى بلا رجلين
It stretched its two legs beneath the finest thing,
I stretched my legs under the best thing,
Where it became one, without either leg.
and now go with only one leg.
