فلَيلاي قد أصبحت صبيتي

فلَيلاي قد أصبحت صبيتي

وقوت العيال غدت عَزَّتي

وقوت العيال غدت عَزَّتي

So my children have now become my Layla,

My nights have become like mornings for my lover

and my family's sustenance has become my ʿAzza.

Providing for her has become my pride

وسفَّهتُ رأي بني عامر

وسفَّهتُ رأي بني عامر

وقلت لمجنونها جَنَّتِ

وقلت لمجنونها جَنَّتِ

And I deemed the judgment of Banu ʿAmir foolish,

I made the mistake of ignoring the advice of the Bani Amer tribe

and told her Majnun, 'She has gone mad.'

And called their crazy one my heaven

وكفَّرتُ عندي بني عُذرَةٍ

وكفَّرتُ عندي بني عُذرَةٍ

ولمت جميلاً على بَثنَةِ

ولمت جميلاً على بَثنَةِ

And, in my own judgment, I declared Banu ʿUdhra unbelievers,

I absolved the Bani Udhra tribe before me

and reproached Jamil over Bathna.

And blamed the beautiful Jamil for Bathna

وصرتُ لأهل الهوى عِبرةً

وصرتُ لأهل الهوى عِبرةً

يلوح النفار على صفحتي

يلوح النفار على صفحتي

And I became a cautionary example to lovers;

I became a lesson for lovers

aversion shows upon my face.

Wounds flash on my cheeks

فكم حسرةٍ منهم قد جَرَت

فكم حسرةٍ منهم قد جَرَت

علي وكم أدمعٍ سَحَّتِ

علي وكم أدمعٍ سَحَّتِ

So how much sorrow from them has flowed

How much regret they have caused me

over me, and how many tears have poured!

And how many tears have poured from me

وصرت ببحر الدنا غارقاً

وصرت ببحر الدنا غارقاً

أروم الخلاص من اللُّجَّةِ

أروم الخلاص من اللُّجَّةِ

And I am now drowning in the sea of worldly life;

I became drowned in an ocean of life

I seek deliverance from the deep waters.
