يا ذكياً بحلمه أحنف القوم
نُفrise بجزرٍwith an ebb وأعلنand proclaim سماءكyour sky فيin مَدa swell; extension
نُف بجزرٍ وأعلن سماءك في مَد
O clever one, the Ahnaf of his people in forbearance,
O wise one with his dream, most upright of people
Rise with an ebb, and proclaim your sky in a swell.
Roam through islands and declare your sky during ebb
أيّwhich خلٍّdear friend حمدتI praised فيin ذاthis المعمّىthe riddle
أيّ خلٍّ حمدت في ذا المعمّى
وهوand he فيamong الناسpeople بالمكارمfor noble deeds أحمدAhmad; most praiseworthy
وهو في الناس بالمكارم أحمد
Which friend have I praised in this riddle?
What emptiness have you praised in the blind one
Among people, he is Ahmad—most praiseworthy for noble deeds.
While among people he is the most praised for his virtues
