My two friends, if you head toward the land of Baghdad,

and see those dwelling places and the gathering place,

and behold my heart's loved ones, then convey

the greetings of a love-distraught lover, thirsty for reunion.

And tell them that the lover is amid flames,

and calamities have bound him in fetters.

For him, remembrance of you is a litany he repeats whenever

longing's urgings come to him, decreeing affliction.

    وشربي حميمٌ للجوى والهوى زادي

    God refuses to let me forget the haunts of your companionship;

my drink for love's anguish is scalding water, and passion my sustenance.

How can I bear your absence, now that

longing's flame blazes in the sorrowful heart?

With my soul I would ransom a moon among you; whenever

I remember him, I am clad in a saffron-dyed robe.

So, O people of Badr, help me and lend aid,

and do not reject me in exile and banishment.

For separation is bitter to taste, and your full moon

is sweet to meet; I would ransom him, going at dusk and dawn.

Remembrance kills me, and hope brings me to life,

and between these two, my vitals have been shattered.

How many sorrows in Karbala have held sway

over my heart, making it grin like lions' fangs.

The greatest of them is losing the beloved, and the difficulty of

meeting him; and no union with him, despite my enviers.
