Is this the reward of a tormented, lovesick man?
Such is the reward of an ardent lover stirred,
Or are these the ways of beautiful, bashful maidens?
Or is this the wont of the fickle and absurd?

O Su'ad, enough of this estrangement and this separation.
My joy was sapped by the exile's bitter plight,
O Su'ad, renew a pledge at al-Rusafa.
My joy was dashed when bonds of love were blurred.

To other than I, it has not occurred.

Pure, unsullied, from a limpid ford.

Obeying the bids of envious curs.

The abject instead of the noble interred.
