I seek peace from love’s vicissitudes—with whom can I make peace?

Or is no one among people unscathed by longing?

Love summoned me long ago, and I answered swiftly,

Going to it while my temple-locks were black, coal-black.

    وعُدتُ ورأسي كالثغامة ثاغم

    Then I came back, the lightning of my gray hair already gleaming;

And returned, my head white as the thaghāmah plant.

The lightning of union’s cloud proved deceptive,

And by evening that piled-up cloud was empty of rain.

I won not even a deferred promise from Laylā—would that it

Might exist, though they say the one who delays is unjust.

I cast off my bridle when it was bound in love,

And gave my excuse free rein before the one who blames me.

    وهل تنفع الشكوى ووجدي ملازمُ

    I do not complain of my burning pain and love-bewilderment;

What use is complaint when my longing never leaves me?

What use is complaint when my heart throbs

With passion, and my mind is silent with grief from ardent love?

    وهل للخوي الذاتيّ تجدي الدعائمُ

    My body is frail, and no supports have held it upright;

Can supports avail against an inherent collapse?

My passion surpasses that of those who describe theirs,

Even if an orator expounds and a poet speaks at length.

God help me! My mind surely bolts from my right path.

God help me! My heart surely recoils from my passion.

God help me! My mind is enriched through the beloved,

While the pupil of my eye swims in tears.

Who, then, will help me, when the beloved cuts me off,

And my fate has folded its flank over treachery, resolved upon it?

My people formed a league against Time, and forth came

Their vanguards, one after another, opposing me.

The hidden burrow-exit brought forth its lizards against me,

And each declared what he had concealed.

Though I have become alone, I am surely valiant,

Courageous, smiling in the face of those plots.

I count as a host where spears interlock,

And scatter a host when pitched battles rage.

I shall leave my home because of humiliation, even if

There, long ago, amulets were hung upon me.

I have no fault except that I act,

And no defect except that I am learned.

    فيا عجباً من ناثرٍ وهو ناظمُ

    Eloquent and expressive, my verse scatters pearls;

How wondrous—a scatterer of pearls who also strings them!

With me the messengers of eloquence are sealed and reach their end,

As noble qualities were sealed in the Prophet’s son:

Abu al-Saʿd wa-l-Fakhr, the valiant one, whose

Marks of immense excellence stand above the stars.

He is the pearl-bright star, the light of the glass of the

Prophet, in whose exalted rank Hāshim takes pride.

His lineage is lofty, towering above the stars,

And no exalted one can rival his high rank.

How could there be, when from his sleeves the cloak’s fragrance

Wafts, and in his prayer-niche religion stands upright?

The pearls of his speech have adorned ears,

And nostrils have scented fine particles of musk from him.

He is of those whose House of Revelation, after its ruin,

Had its pillars and supports restored through them.

    وقد أنتجتهم من كرامٍ كرائم

    They are the Prophet’s kin, through whom we take pride in the cloak;

Noble women bore them from noble men.

    Generous, he benefits whoever is in straitened circumstances;

Brave, he protects whoever Time has brought low.

Astute, he has a plan for every calamity

That brings the slitting of throats when it strikes.

He plans for troubles yet to come, as though

He knows everything with which Time can wound.

His judgment is keener than swords whose edges

Cut flint clean through, sharp blades that they are.

    If learning is mentioned, he is Nuʿmān in his inquiry;

If generosity is mentioned, he is, without doubt, Ḥātim.

Noble in character, from Ḥaydar’s lineage,

Lavish in gifts, his generosity surges like waves.

He is free of every blemish; thus

His noble qualities sit astride beauty’s steeds.

He is the consummate scholar and the guiding landmark

Toward whom seekers flock and circle.

    تقاريره تُهدى بهنّ العوالمُ

    His writings are a light shining upon mankind;

Through his expositions the worlds are guided.

O son of noble men who raced ahead to lofty heights,

O master of those who remain—and all know it!

Pardon my praise, for I fall short,

Nor have I offered what is most fitting in the verse I compose.

For the qualities worthy of praise in you are precious,

And no poet has counted a tenth of a tenth of them.

My aim is to repay some of your kindness

To us, for you are our fortress and safeguards.

You are our protector against Time when it attacks,

And mighty, ruinous calamities are poured upon us.

After our father, you were the best to shoulder

Our burdens, while every man opposed us.

Especially now, we surely belong to you

In allegiance, as Salmān was loyal to your father.

So be a shield for us, the House of al-Suwaydī,

Through you we ward off dangers when they collide.

May you ever remain a refuge for people from death,

And may the Naʿāʾim stars pour their seasonal rain upon you.
