I gathered knowledge from childhood until

I reached five years beyond forty.

And I taught the sciences; with many an insight

rare, I sent the students forth.

My aim in this was not renown,

nor to rub the noses of the envious in the dust.

Rather, through it I served the one in whom hope is placed,

the intercessor for creation, the best of the messengers.

How, then, could I be wronged, when the Chosen One has become

an impregnable fortress for me against misfortunes?

And how could the enemies’ injustice reach me,

when the Messenger to the worlds is on my side?

For how many tyrants have acted insolently against us,

and all became captives in the grave!

Ah, who will tell our enemies about us,

that we are above the folly of the foolish,

and that God has remained our helper,

and that God is the protector of the Muslims,

and that oppression’s pasture is unwholesome,

and that our enemy did not last long?

Yet, by your life, I do not fear

    for the enemies, nor show them tenderness;

but I fear, when a punishment

comes upon them, that it may strike the righteous.
