بشراك يا مفضال يا ذا الرفعةَ
ياO شهمnoble-hearted one ياO معطاءlavish giver ياO ذاpossessor of الهمَّةِhigh resolve
يا شهم يا معطاء يا ذا الهمَّةِ
Glad tidings to you, O generous benefactor, O man of high rank!
Congratulations, O exalted one, O noble one,
O noble-hearted one, O lavish giver, O man of high resolve!
O valiant one, O generous one, O man of resolve,
ياO منyou who سماsurpassed أقرانهhis peers فغداand so he became علىupon
يا من سما أقرانه فغدا على
دستthrone الإمارةrulership ضيغماًa lion ذاpossessing لبدةa mane
دست الإمارة ضيغماً ذا لبدة
O you who surpassed your peers and became, upon
O you who excelled your peers, thus reaching
the throne of rulership, a lion with a mane.
The seat of rule, a precious pearl, finely crafted,
أفردتyou were singled out بالنصرwith victory العميمall-embracing وربّهاand its Lord
أفردت بالنصر العميم وربّها
خصَّspecially favored المؤيَّدَal-Mu’ayyad (the aided one) وهوand he is عينthe very essence of النُصرةِtriumph
خصَّ المؤيَّدَ وهو عين النُصرةِ
You were singled out for all-embracing victory, and its Lord
You were singled out with complete victory, and its Lord
specially favored al-Mu’ayyad, who is the very essence of triumph.
Favored the Supported One, who is the essence of triumph,
ومُنحتand you were granted منfrom ربthe Lord of العبادthe servants بمنحةwith a gift
ومُنحت من رب العباد بمنحة
مقبولةaccepted أكرمhow noble! بهاwith it منas a منحةِgift
مقبولة أكرم بها من منحةِ
And you were endowed by the Lord of humankind with a gift,
And you were granted from the Lord of beings a gift
accepted—how noble a gift it is!
Welcomed, with which the Giver honored more than any gift,
بمجيءwith the coming of مولودa newborn بهthrough him زالvanished العناhardship
بمجيء مولود به زال العنا
عنّاfrom us فمنهso, from him عصرُناour age بمسرَّةِwith joy
عنّا فمنه عصرُنا بمسرَّةِ
With the coming of a newborn, through whom hardship vanished
With the coming of a newborn, through whom sorrow
from us; thus, through him, our age is filled with joy.
Was removed from us - so our era rejoices with delight -
قدindeed جاءhe came فيon أحَدَa Sunday ليؤذنَto announce أنّهthat he
قد جاء في أحَدَ ليؤذنَ أنّه
أحَدٌunique بكلin every فضيلةvirtue ومديحةand praiseworthy quality
أحَدٌ بكل فضيلة ومديحة
He came on a Sunday to announce that he
He came on the First to herald that he
is unique in every virtue and praiseworthy quality.
Is the One, with every merit and praise,
تاهتgloried بهin him بغدادBaghdad إذsince صارتbecame بهthrough him
تاهت به بغداد إذ صارت به
جنّاتِgardens عدنِof Eden بالمكارمwith noble deeds خُفَّتِsurrounded (apparently intended: حُفَّتِ)
جنّاتِ عدنِ بالمكارم خُفَّتِ
Baghdad gloried in him, for through him it became
Baghdad wandered astray, for it became, through him,
Gardens of Eden, surrounded by noble deeds.
The gardens of Eden, with kindness made calm,
أمِنَتshe became safe بمولدهthrough his birth نكايةthe harm of غادرِa traitor
أمِنَت بمولده نكاية غادرِ
قذرfoul العقيدةthe creed نجسهاimpure in it ذيpossessed of نكبةcalamity
قذر العقيدة نجسها ذي نكبة
Through his birth, she was safe from a traitor’s harm,
It was secured, by his birth, from the treachery of
foul of creed, impure in it, a bearer of calamity.
The filthy, impure creed of the one of ill fortune,
لاno غروwonder فيin ذاthis إذاwhen إلىto المَلِكthe king انتمىhe traced his lineage
لا غرو في ذا إذا إلى المَلِك انتمى
تاجcrown الملوكthe kings فيالهاso, how splendid it is! منas a نسبةِlineage
تاج الملوك فيالها من نسبةِ
No wonder in this, when he traces his lineage to the king,
No surprise, for he belongs to the King -
the crown of kings—what a lineage!

ياO شهرmonth of مولدهhis birth حَوَيتَyou have gained فضيلةa distinction
يا شهر مولده حَوَيتَ فضيلة
كلall الشهورthe months لماfor what حويتَyou have gained تمنَّتِlonged
كل الشهور لما حويتَ تمنَّتِ
O month of his birth, you have gained a distinction;
O month of his birth, you contained virtue
all the months longed for what you gained.
Of all months, for you contained the wished-for,
وجمعتand you gathered فيin ذاthis الشأنmatter عزّاًglory مفرداًunique
وجمعت في ذا الشأن عزّاً مفرداً
بشراكglad tidings to you فيin التاريخhistory ياO ذاDhu (possessor of) الحِجَّةِal-Hijjah (the pilgrimage)
بشراك في التاريخ يا ذا الحِجَّةِ
And in this matter you have amassed unique glory;
And you gathered, in this matter, unmatched glory,
glad tidings to you in history, O Dhu al-Hijjah!
Congratulations, in history, O proof!
