And but for you, misfortune's arrows would have reached us.

And we would have stood watch between fang and claw

of evil, that we might be able to ward off calamities.

and from your forefather al-Faruq comes the marshaling of battalions.

Our lands' safety lies with Uthman, lord of mankind,

so they feared no enemies from any quarter.

Noble of soul, boundless in generosity, cutting off

distress among people and reaching out to the petitioner.

He considers calamity's mark before its arrival.

Indeed, a learned man, chastened by consequences, gave generously.

An armored warrior: when he crushes lances with his right hand,

the reverse of negatives would surely result for his adversaries.

And if an assailant rises for renewed battle,

then the most compassionate of al-Faruq's sons is the first to spring.

Then, on the broad field of battle, you find his sword

casting glances at mountains as though they were a player's rags.

So, O benefactor of the petitioner, when he approaches as a visitor,

O you who lull the praiser with the loftiest gifts!

Eid has come with good fortune; a hurrying well-wisher sings out,

congratulating you—rejoice, you who set high offices in motion!

And your servant, on this Eid, approaches you as a visitor,

to join a delegation, and my riding-camels have already been bridled toward you.

So in every half-line touched by the page of my praise,

I record the date of a glory that shone above the stars.
