    Convey a lover's greeting, O night traveler,

    to the virtuous one, noble in family and neighbor.

    وبُثّ في حيّه ذكري وأخباري

    And break the seal of my message amid his dwellings;

    and spread mention of me and my news through his quarter.

    And say: I left longing's captive in affliction,

    as though the Creator had singled him out for anguish.

    He weeps for you with tears like a night-rain cloud,

    and from their crimson tears the Tigris flows.

    Those who look can scarcely see his form,

    were it not for the sigh of a heart ablaze with fire.

    As though he were a wasted body from separation—

    a branch assailed by a whirlwind.

    A predawn breeze stirs longing within him,

    and birdsong roots love's anguish within him.

    Singing above the tree trunks through day and night,

    in al-Karkh, scattering tears upon the blossoms.

    Weeping for Taj al-Izz's loneliness in the depths of night,

    and dawn laughs, bringing comfort with its light.

    O generous one, ascending to the heights of glory,

    Bahram serves him, as does the night-roving star.

    Be gentle with your age-mate, O generous one, for he has

    an illness that the remoteness of home has stamped upon him.

    قد أسفر البعد عن جَهدٍ وأضرار

    So do not prolong your journey in al-Shahba;

    distance has already laid bare hardship and harm.

    What good is staying in a dwelling with no companion?

    And why do you sit among the falcon and the ravening beast?

    If it is for livelihood, the Provider will bring it,

    even if you are in a trackless desert or the depths of a brimming sea.

    بل كل خلقٍ له رزقٌ بمقدارِ

    God did not create any creature only to abandon it;

    rather, every creature has provision in due measure.

    And have you broken covenants bound between us

    in al-Karkh, among little gardens and flowers?

    And have you befriended a young man whose character you have tested,

    like me in character, a staunch keeper of secrets?

    If that is how you are, then none keeps me company

    but remembrance and sorrows—my companions by night.

    فالصرم للعهد عندي أقبح العار

    I do not sever the covenant, though the Indian blade severs me;

    for severing a covenant is, to me, the vilest disgrace.

    The Guardian has refused to let me yearn for the love of any young man

    other than you, in my poverty or prosperity.

    Indeed, I use up my days, each escorted

    by grief for you—the grief of a weary, lovelorn man.

    وإن ترَ البرق ليلاً فهو من ناري

    Thunder comes from my sigh, if you hear it nearby;

    and if you see lightning at night, it is from my fire.

    Whenever I behold al-Karkh's spring, I make it lush

    with tears from my eyes, overflowing and pouring down.

    and separation has made plain my poverty in this matter.

    May care and rain bless our bygone days

    between al-Sarat, Qasr al-Khuld, and al-Jari.
